Captain America: has Red Skull been found?

Simon Brew

As the casting process of casting the title role continues, the villain in The First Avenger: Captain America is looking a little clearer…

Published on Mar 12, 2010

Earlier in the week, we brought you the latest update on the Captain America casting process which is still continuing right now. There are still several names in the hat, and it's probably best to have a look here rather than us try and sum it all up again.

However, at least one piece of The First Avenger: Captain America casting jigsaw is slotting into place, and that's the role of the Red Skull. And the man in the frame for the job? Hugo Weaving, who worked with Captain America Joe Johnston on his last movie, The Wolfman.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, and it does note that it's not 100% a done deal yet, primarily because of Marvel's notoriously tough deals (comparably low salary, long commitments). But we'd imagine, nonetheless, that this will be confirmed shortly.

I actually thought his name just before I clicked on the link in my RSS feed- woohoo, I win! No idea if he'll be a good Red Skull but I'll go see it whatever, its a Marvel film.

Hope it pans out, this would be an excellent choice.

I know he was already in 2 Marvel movies (Blade 3 and Wolverine), but I think Ryan Reynolds would be great in this role. He's very fit, he has screen presence, and he can carry a movie (I suppose). I just keep turning back to the fact that he already has a degree of name recognition and the proper physique (he's actually the height, weight, even the hair color of Steve Rogers!). But with these names floating around, I don't think any of them can do it.

Weaving's not let the team down yet (I speak of LOTR, V and of course 'Agent Smith') so a solid, if dare I say uninspired choice...

It just hit me that the guy from Inglorious Basterds would be pretty good too. Something about the cool way he delivered his lines... Awesome!

Just a thought, but if this movie is going to have any real success then use established actors. Hulk- Ed Norton Iron Man- Rob Down jnr Spidey- Tobey maguire Captain America- Ryan Phillippe. (have you seen Way of the Gun- this kid can act and looks the part). As for John Krasinski I think he is a very funny guy but not really Captain America material.
