The Captain America casting shortlist gets shorter

Simon Brew

Two names fall off the Captain America list, as one or two more get linked with it. But are we any closer to working out who will play The First Avenger?

Published on Mar 9, 2010

Here's where we were on the casting list for Marvel's upcoming movie The First Avenger: Captain America. A week or two back, it was revealed that the current shortlist had been boiled down to five. The highest profile of those names was John Krasinski from The Office, and he was joined by Chace Crawford, Mike Vogel, Scott Porter and Michael Cassidy. The five were set to do testing with Marvel, who could, in theory, have thrown all five out and started the casting process again.

The latest reports suggest that two of them are definitely out of the running, and that more may yet be added. Through their respective Twitter and Facebook accounts, Michael Cassidy and Scott Porter have both revealed that they're no longer on Marvel's list, which suggests Krasinski, Crawford and Vogel may well still be in there.

Comic Book Movie has also reported that Dane Cook apparently auditioned for the part of Captain America too, but it looks like the actor has been unsuccessful. You can read more about that here.

And there's more. Sam Worthington, while still interested, isn't likely to be on the list, and Screenrant reports that Robert Buckley has also auditioned for the part, but may be in the running to play Bucky instead. There's also a scary report doing the rounds that a couple of Jonas Brothers have auditioned to take part in the film. Gadzookz.

An announcement is expected soon on just who's going to be Captain America anyway, with director Joe Johnston needing to roll cameras soon to hit the planned release date for the movie.

The First Avenger: Captain America is scheduled for release on July 22nd 2011.

I haven't read Ultimate Cap (which i've heard rumors that this is based upon) but can someone explain why they seem to be casting such unintimidating guys for a role as the ultimate Hero amongst heroes. I like most of these actors in what i've seen them in but can you imagine any of them telling Chris Hemsworth (Thor) or RDJr to "stand down or i will put you down".

if Chance Bloody Crawford gets cast why I might just have to put some kind of evil spell on Marvel.

I think I was the last person on the planet to see Avatar, and whilst the article rules it out, I do think Sam Worthington would make a great Cap America… we already know he looks good in Blue. - How about Christoph Waltz (Tarantinos 'the jew hunter') for the Red Skull?
