Follow-up: The Daily Mail vs Kick-Ass

Simon Brew

After the Daily Mail finally went for Kick-Ass yesterday, points have been raised about its report of the story...

Published on Mar 2, 2010

Yesterday we reported that The Daily Mail had woken up to the fact that the movie Kick-Ass existed, running an article under the headline “Jonathan Ross's wife Jane Goldman causes outrage with film featuring a foul-mouthed 11-year-old assassin”. You can read our report here.

Since then, a storm has been brewing against the Mail story, citing factual problems with it, and also noting that it’s fallen very much in line with a piece in The Sunday Times that was printed the day before. Tabloidwatch picked up the similarities between the two pieces, and goes into some detail on them. But it also raises and reinforces a series of points that the Daily Mail managed to overlook.

Namely:

* Jane Goldman is the co-screenwriter of Kick-Ass. The Daily Mail seems to think that she is the sole author of the piece, whereas in fact she penned the screenplay with the film’s director, Matthew Vaughn. Vaughn does not warrant a single mention in the Mail’s article. But then he’s not related to Jonathan Ross.

* Furthermore, Goldman is of course adapting a previously-written work. This, again, is entirely overlooked. Kick-Ass is based on the comic book of the same name by Mark Millar. The Sunday Times went further than the Mail on this, running the headline “Jonathan Ross's wife Jane Goldman spawns girl assassin, 11”. Er, but she didn’t.

* Tabloid Watch also notes that The Daily Mail, and other sources, have quoted Frank Furedi. Furedi is the professor of sociology at Kent University, but the quotation that has been used makes no reference to Kick-Ass at all. He’s quoted as saying “This promotes the idea that infantilising adulthood is okay and that we are no longer expected to draw lines between us and kids”. There’s certainly an argument about cinema there, and that’s what Furedo was making. But – crucially – he was talking about the film industry, not specifically Kick-Ass itself. The Mail does say this in its article, to be fair, but it’s tucked away in the midst of an anti-Kick-Ass rant.

Tabloidwatch has plenty more to say on the matter here, and you can read the original report at the Daily Mail here. The Sunday Times article is here.

Finally, then, a challenge for you. Inevitably, the Daily Mail is going to review Kick-Ass when it arrives in UK cinemas on 26th March. So what we want you to do in the comments is come up with a 100 word review of the film that would fit suitably in the pages of hte Mail. We'll dig out a prize for the best...

Kick-A** is a superhero film from odious reptile Jonathan Ross' vile wife Jane Goldman and the queen of vulgarity Madonna's ex-husband's best friend Matthew Vaughn. Kick-A** will offend, disgust and insult anyone unfortunate enough to see it. It seems that whilst making Kick-A** Ross, Goldman and Vaughn have also committed child abuse in ways only before seen by social workers working in New Labour controlled council areas by forcing the child actress portraying superheroine "Hate Girl" to use sexual swear words whilst committing atrocities Kick-A** must surely be the final nail in the coffin that was once Jonathan Ross' career.

apropos of nothing, when Vaughn & Goldman's "Stardust" was released, there was nary a word mentioned about the fact that it was based on Neil Gaiman's novel - I distinctly recall Wossy declaring on his chat show "my wife wrote this movie," which seemed somewhat a disservice to Gaiman.. seems the same will be happening to Millar this time around. But then of course, the DM has no idea who Millar or Gaiman are, compared to a pink haired celebrity wife.

'having endured almost 30 minutes of the foul mouthed 'movie' Kick A** I experienced a sudden and horrific pain in my gut. It was at this point that I passed a live kitten through my bowel. No sooner had I done this than a jeering teenage fool sat next to me who definitely lived on a council estate was definitely carrying a knife and definitely intending to use it on me, then picked up the freshly passed kitten and ate it.'

In October 2008 the overpaid and smug TV ‘personality’ Jonathan Ross made a series of viciously obscene phone calls to beloved ‘Manuel’ actor Andrew Sachs. The morally bankrupt BBC let the state sanctioned sex pest off with just a suspension and he soon returned to broadcast more odious smut. Thankfully Jonathan Ross has announced he will be leaving the cowardly BBC this year. It is rumoured that he is planning to take his unique brand of offensiveness to America. Good riddance. Oh, and by the way Kick Ass is evil, Britain is broken and it’s all Jonathan Ross’s fault.

Actually, this storm of idiocy started in the Daily Star a few weeks ago, and indeed the Mail piece uses some of the exact same quotes as that piece. I tweeted it to ultraculture and his eviscerated it in a style that Hitgirl would no doubt approve of: http://www.ultraculture.co.uk/2183-daily-star-watch-the-kick-ass-trailer-pretend-its-newsworthy.htm Sorry for linkage on your fine site, but this story only gets funnier the more twats that get worked up about it.

I've got a theory: they get paid by advertisers whenever someone hits up a page, right? Regardless of how people feel about the content. Maybe they're doing it on purpose by this point? Otherwise, I don't know how somebody could write such utter arse gravy and hope to maintain their integrity as a journalist. Or, indeed, their job.

Is there any point to printed news anymore? Seriously. The last one I had in my hand was crumpled up while I was using it to clean my shower stall glass. I get all my news online and on TV from reputable sources, because what I see in print is half-researched, sensationalist, celeb-driven, politically-driven inflammatory, dumbed-down pap. Not that the Net doesn't have similar dearths of veracity and quality, but at least I have a greater choice of sources online. O'clock be ashamed to be seen buying most of the newspapers out there, even picking up the free one's like the Metro.

Disgraced T* Pr*senter Jonathan Ross is backing a sick new movie aimed at corrupting our children. K*ck-A*s was created by the warped mind of Ross's sick "wife" Jane Goldman and features an 11 year old girl killing people, a character clearly aimed at sick paedophiles. Experts believe that K**K-Ass will cause cancer in the Royal Family. It's health & safety gone mad! Broken Britain!

Nothing offends the senses quite like this latest offering from the House Of Ross. Morally corrupt, overly violent and featuring actual on-screen child abuse, it should be banned and all involved hit in the face with a big fish. This paper has also uncovered that a secret network of asylum-seeking benefit fraudsters made the film, and exposure to this montrosity has been proven to cause cancer, lower the price of your house and force your children to carry knives and eat GM foods whilst listening to rap music. Its political correctness gone mad!

Goldman and Ross, the boy blunder, do it again!!

Granted it’s no ‘My Super ex-girlfriend’ but, even though it’s the work of the flame haired Jane Goldman and her boy blunder husband Jonathan Ross, Kick-ass is cinematic treat! Violence, death and a foul-mouthed child are Ross’ two fingers to the world, that nailed him to a cross in 2008. For me the only glaring error was to not cast Andrew Sachs in the lead role, as another chance to say ‘i’m sorry’ one more time. Seeing as though he got a short term contract on Corrie out of the Ross/Brand hooplah, he can’t complain. This film is a breath of fresh air and in a world of taboos, lies and made up stories, it’s strangely refreshing. If I worked for Heat, which I think I might do very soon, I’d be loving this more than a retouched photo of a celebrity thigh. Ross, you might have had nothing to do with this, but f**k that, as a character in Kick-ass might say. You can’t beat free publicity. 11 stars out of 10.

Additionally - Jonathan Ross and Neil Gaiman are really good friend so when he said 'my wife wrote this' (in relation to Stardust) I would assume Neil wouldnt mind too much...and probably if he did would just ask Jonathan if he could read his Steve Dikto's run of SpiderMan comics

The depolarisation of the moral compass is a contagion, bordering on an epidemic within the home of the disgraced Jonathan Ross. His wife, Jane Goldman, now finds herself mother to a special kind of cinematic evil. Preying on our youth, the abhorrent 'Kick-Ass' actively encourages our vulnerable children to use knives, and guns to kill. All the time, the senseless violence in almost every frame shows the 'heroes' of the story wearing bruises like badges of honour. While purported to be a 'Comedy' film, it serves more as a precursor to the fearful where our country is heading. Michael Howard wept.

I vote for Durdle2000 - All it needed was for that council estate teenager to also be a gay immigrant and he would have hit all their readership trigger points. Not to mention the awesome description of *actually* shitting a kitten.
