Follow-up: The Daily Mail vs Kick-Ass
Simon Brew
After the Daily Mail finally went for Kick-Ass yesterday, points have been raised about its report of the story...
Published on Mar 2, 2010
Yesterday we reported that The Daily Mail had woken up to the fact that the movie Kick-Ass existed, running an article under the headline “Jonathan Ross's wife Jane Goldman causes outrage with film featuring a foul-mouthed 11-year-old assassin”. You can read our report here.
Since then, a storm has been brewing against the Mail story, citing factual problems with it, and also noting that it’s fallen very much in line with a piece in The Sunday Times that was printed the day before. Tabloidwatch picked up the similarities between the two pieces, and goes into some detail on them. But it also raises and reinforces a series of points that the Daily Mail managed to overlook.
Namely:
* Jane Goldman is the co-screenwriter of Kick-Ass. The Daily Mail seems to think that she is the sole author of the piece, whereas in fact she penned the screenplay with the film’s director, Matthew Vaughn. Vaughn does not warrant a single mention in the Mail’s article. But then he’s not related to Jonathan Ross.
* Furthermore, Goldman is of course adapting a previously-written work. This, again, is entirely overlooked. Kick-Ass is based on the comic book of the same name by Mark Millar. The Sunday Times went further than the Mail on this, running the headline “Jonathan Ross's wife Jane Goldman spawns girl assassin, 11”. Er, but she didn’t.
* Tabloid Watch also notes that The Daily Mail, and other sources, have quoted Frank Furedi. Furedi is the professor of sociology at Kent University, but the quotation that has been used makes no reference to Kick-Ass at all. He’s quoted as saying “This promotes the idea that infantilising adulthood is okay and that we are no longer expected to draw lines between us and kids”. There’s certainly an argument about cinema there, and that’s what Furedo was making. But – crucially – he was talking about the film industry, not specifically Kick-Ass itself. The Mail does say this in its article, to be fair, but it’s tucked away in the midst of an anti-Kick-Ass rant.
Tabloidwatch has plenty more to say on the matter here, and you can read the original report at the Daily Mail here. The Sunday Times article is here.
Finally, then, a challenge for you. Inevitably, the Daily Mail is going to review Kick-Ass when it arrives in UK cinemas on 26th March. So what we want you to do in the comments is come up with a 100 word review of the film that would fit suitably in the pages of hte Mail. We'll dig out a prize for the best...
