Michael Bay gives Transformers 3 update

Simon Brew

With the film heading into production later this year, director Michael Bay has been talking about the possibility of 3D for Transformers 3…

Published on Mar 1, 2010

Ah, the 3D craze. In a post-Avatar and post-Alice In Wonderland world, I'm personally still yet to see a use of 3D that blows my socks off, but there seems to be no shortage of contenders to be the next to have a go.

Earlier this year, it was reported that director Michael Bay was considering taking the next Transformers film 3D, although it had yet to be decided whether the technology would be implemented at shooting stage, or added on in post-production. The latter is what's happening with Warner Bros' upcoming Clash Of The Titans, which has had its release date pushed back by two weeks to the start of April to bolt on 3D elements as quickly as possible. Personally, I'm of the view that, if you're going to do 3D, at least commit to it from day one, and don't add it as an afterthought once the footage is already in the can.

So, what's happening with the 3D of Transformers 3? Here's what Michael Bay has to say on it, courtesy of MTV:

"It's a process we're testing with some Transformers scenes. How successful it is with my movie in terms of a lot of real stuff coming out of the frame, real dirt, real complicated little particles coming towards the lens, because hopefully that process will work. I've seen some tests that look great on other movies. I just want to see how it looks on my footage."

Hmmm. So they're retrofitting 3D onto existing material to see how that'd work out? That, as some others have speculated, seems to point towards the bolting of 3D work on after shooting, unless we've read that wrong.

Bay also reiterates in the same piece that he's intending to throw a few surprises into the pot this time, and that there will be lots of twists, and more new characters too.

to an extent im kind of happy for retrofitting 3D, simply because it will give filmmakers less opportunity to scream "LOOK! IM 3D! SOMETHINGS COMING AT THE SCREEN!" like 80% of 3D film releases. Like any other filmmaking device or technique, it should be subtle to the point its not glaringly in your face

Hard to say whether this means they'll be retrofitting the movie with 3D or not. If the retrofitting process looks like crap on the footage they're testing things with, they may decide to shoot the whole thing in 3D from the get-go.

Few surprises, lots of twists and more new characters? That can only mean one thing: Dinobots!! They return to protect the earth against evil invaders, joining forces with the Autobots. The dinobots would look awesome in 3D too! And I WILL pay money to watch that on the big screen.
