The Matt Damon ready reckoner

Simon Brew

It's Friday. It's the newly-crowned Ready Reckoner Day (TM)! Simon sits Matt Damon down in the chair...

Published on Sep 7, 2007

The star of the summer, with two blockbuster threequels under his belt, Matt Damon hasn’t done enough to sidestep the glare of the Den Of Geek Ready Reckoner.

So let’s get down to business….

School Ties 4 out of 5
Smashing, and not widely seen drama.

Courage Under Fire 2 out of 5
Another crap Meg Ryan film.

Chasing Amy 4 out of 5
Kevin Smith’s finest hour. So far.

The Rainmaker 2 out of 5
Slow, borderline-boring Grisham adaptation.

Good Will Hunting 4 out of 5
The breakthrough role in the film what he co-wrote. And won his Oscar for.

Saving Private Ryan
3 out of 5
Overrated Spielberg flick.

Rounders
2 out of 5
Surprisingly weak John Dahl flick, most notable for John Malkovich going over the top. Again.

Dogma 2 out of 5
Kevin Smith’s weakest hour. So far.

The Talented Mr Ripley
2 out of 5
Smashing acting, but woefully overrated film.

Titan A.E. 3 out of 5
Pleasantly surprising animated movie.

The Legend Of Bagger Vance 2 out of 5
Finding Forrester 2 out of 5
All The Pretty Horses
2 out of 5
A trio of two-star CV fillers.

Ocean’s 11 4 out of 5
Smashing remake, and the best of the trilogy.

The Majestic
3 out of 5
A bit of voiceover work in Frank Darabont’s whimsical drama.

Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron 2 out of 5
Piss poor animated rubbish. About a horse.

The Bourne Identity
3 out of 5
Two thirds really good, last third quite weak. But still good.

Stuck On You 1 out of 5
Crap Farrelly Brothers rubbish.

EuroTrip 1 out of 5
Crap may-as-well-be Farrelly Brothers rubbish.

Jersey Girl 2 out of 5
Forgettable Kevin Smith movie. Not bad, not good, not much.

The Bourne Supremacy 4 out of 5
Super sequel. But the best was yet to come…

Ocean’s Twelve 1 out of 5
Crap, self-indulgent rubbish.

Syriana 3 out of 5
Too complex, very heavy, but quite good.

The Departed 4 out of 5
Not top notch Scorsese, but still a terrific film.

The Good Shepherd 3 out of 5
Long and ponderous, but this writer still liked it.

Ocean’s Thirteen 3 out of 5
Not a bad way to end a trilogy.

The Bourne Ultimatum 4 out of 5
A stunning way to end a trilogy. Damon’s best film.

Not watched:
Among the no shows are The Brothers Grimm, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Gerry, Glory Daze and Geronimo.

Next from me: Ben Affleck. Ho ho ho. Gigli here we come!

I had no idea we were counting cameos (Chasing Amy).

Hey, I left out Field of Dreams! I didn't count *all* small roles!

I thought I quite liked Matt Damon but reading through that list of films, I really can't justify that.
