David Goyer signs up to write Superman movie?

Superman: The Man Of Steel finally seems to be pressing ahead, and we’ve got a round-up of rumours right here...

Published on Feb 25, 2010

After year after year rolling in development hell in the aftermath of 2006's Superman Returns, it seems that the Man Of Steel's journey back to the big screen is finally, finally getting somewhere.

Earlier this year, Warner Bros made what looks like an inspired decision to recruit Christopher Nolan to oversee the Superman franchise in some form of ‘Godfather' role. Given that Nolan has rebooted Batman in a manner that you'd assume was beyond Warner Bros' wildest dreams a decade ago, it was mighty smart thinking on the studio's part.

And now one of Nolan's regular collaborators, David Goyer, appears to have signed up to write Superman: The Man Of Steel.

Goyer quit as showrunner on ABC's FlashForward TV show a few weeks back, with the assumption being that he was working on the script for Christopher Nolan's next Batman movie. That may still be the case, but according to Latino Review, he's the man holding the quill that looks to bring Superman back.

Furthermore, it's reported that Goyer is looking to do a take on the character that takes the franchise back to the John Byrne mini-series of the 1980s. Byrne's Man Of Steel comic book series was regarded as a reboot for the character, and Goyer is reportedly looking to take that as a basis for a film that's "Modern. Believable. FUN!".

Further details posted at Latino Review suggest that the film will indeed be called Superman: The Man Of Steel, and that Brandon Routh will definitely not be pulling the blue tights on again. It's very unlikely, too, that Bryan Singer is getting asked back to the director's chair, although given that he's reportedly working on a Battlestar Galactica movie, that's not a huge surprise.

The story Goyer is looking to put across won't be an origin story, and will include Lex Luthor and Brainiac as its villains. It's also taking place in a world where the Daily Planet is under threat from Internet pressures. Blimey. Bloody websites, eh?

You can read the full report over at Latino Review here, and we'll keep you posted as to how this develops. Our views thus far are this: Goyer is a terrific writer (less successful as a director), and if he's left to explore this properly, this is easily the most positive Superman movie news in a long, long time...

To be honest that's dream news for me. David Goyer writing and he's basing it off John Byrne's take (the one I grew up with so has lots of nostalgia value) the only way this could get more awesome is if Richard Donner comes back to direct.

By KWillyvox "Not peep tom on Louis and her hubby" What the hell was singer thinking. I hope they lose the kid as well and get put the costume back to normal. I still cant believe that I paid to see that at the IMAX.

As long as he doesn't fly, doesn't wear the costume, and fights a giant spider at the end I'm good.

Hmm. Goyer is hit and miss. His work on BATMAN and the first BLADE was good, although I'm curious to know how much of the Bat-flicks was the Nolans. I liked Singer's, but I'd like to see a return to the proper Supes. I just wish they'd hire some actual comic book writers to do it. Hire Matt Wagner or Jeph Loeb or Grant Morrison or even Neal Adams. Or Bruce Timm and Paul Dini. It amazes me that all these great comic properties are generally taken out of the hands of the people who made them great in the first place.

Superman Returns: I still liked it, some of my favourite set pieces of all time ("Of ALL TIME!") but far too much precious screentime chewed up with ill-conceived character dev. Bosworth was a weak Lois, and a weak Lois means a weak Supes- she is his compass and his tie to our World. I thought Routh was actually great as Clark, even if a little spoofy, but thats kinda what Clark is, Kal-El's spoof on what we would see as the polar opposite to Superman. There are a few good alternatives to put into the role, but please audition for Clark first, Supes second. Anyone can play a god, not so many can play a God acting as a fool.

The opening premise of Superman Returns, that hes been in space and doesnt relise things have changed in his absence, made him look an idiot. Also, darkening his costume made him duller, not more serious. Another ditzy moll who changes sides when she learns how nasty Lex is. Supermans son. But there were good things. Routh was the second best Superman ever, after Reeve.(Has he done anything since, or is he a victim of the curse?)Clarks mother having to wait outside the hospital in the crowd. Spaceys Luthor. The tribute to the cover of Action 1. Etc. Hope Goyer doesnt try to darken Supes. The primary colours outfit is his public face, it doesnt mean theres no room for complexity in the character. Nor does dark necessarily equal adult.
