The Karate Kid remake: the brand new trailer

Simon Brew

Does the remake of The Karate Kid suddenly look like the must-see film of the summer off the back of its new trailer? You decide…

Published on Feb 24, 2010

"I will teach you real kung-fu."

Now here's a film that, judging by the comments it's attracted thus far, could use a few friends. The remake of The Karate Kid, starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, isn't one of the summer's most eagerly awaited films, it's probably fair to say. And you suspect that Columbia isn't that fussed about attracting those who still hold the original in high regard, in favour of trying to bring in a new, younger audience.

Columbia has released, with that in mind, a brand new trailer for the film, which you can see below. It's a fairly conventional, by the numbers job from where we're sitting, and appreciating we're not going out on much of a limb here, it doesn't look like it's going to alter too many people's perceptions of what they're going to get.

The Karate Kid arrives in the US from 11th June, and in the UK on 16th July.

Don't see what people have against this film, it looks okayish to me. Yeah, the obligatory training scene on the Chinese Wall and the fact that there is no karate AT ALL in this film could be a turn off. But I have to admit that I expected far worse than what I've seen so far. [Well, I have to admit that I have a soft spot for Jackie Chan films (though most of his films over the last ten years were crap)]

It should really be called Kung-fu Kid, and the trailer picks out all the standard mumbo-Jumbo lines that seem to crop up in this sort of film – ‘Connect to the energy around you!', ‘Everything is Kung-fu!’ But it does hint at some self awareness with the Jedi reference and the fly scene at the end is fun. I’m hoping for some lightness of touch that isn’t visible in the trailer and it could be a good popcorn movie.

Okay, so I give them a little bit of credit for making the 'new kid in town' thing something different that the original. So, I think if they had just not taken the same name I would have mentally cut it some slack since it is at least being different enough. Too bad they had already blown the 'Next Karate Kid' title on the Hillary Swank nastiness. Will admit that the song and fly bit at the end was a cute nod.

Wow, this will take it's place amongst the greatest of Horror films. That was without question the most horrifying trailer ever!

Surprisingly it doesn't appear to suck. Even the whiny kid from The Day the Earth Stood Still doesn't seem annoying. As clearly its Kung Fu I guess there will be some explanation forthcoming about why its called the Karate Kid.

Kungfu or karate, it's all good, as long as he wins with a great kick-ass move! So, will the cranebird pose be back or have they come up with another finisher?

Doesn't the kid seem way too young?
