10 terrible movie posters
Glen Chapman
He's already picked his favourites - but what are the ten movie posters that sent Glen scurrying anywhere but his local cinema?
Published on Feb 23, 2010
Having looked at the top ten movie posters last year, I thought I'd take a look at some awful ones. I've mainly looked over the past decade for this collection, with the exception of one from the 80s that still strikes me as particularly awful.
So, after looking through hundreds of candidates, here's my top ten for you all to enjoy (or not, as the case may be).
10. Fired Up (2009)

F U indeed. a terrible poster for what turned out to be a really quite rancid teen comedy. At least there are bones of honesty to the poster, but seriously: was anyone looking at that seriously going to go and see the film? In fact, did anyone see Fired Up! in a cinema?!
9. The Ugly Truth (2009)

Recently the subject of a review on this very site (read Carley's glowing review of it here), I have to say this film doesn't appeal to me in any way and I can't imagine ever having the desire to watch this. The poster does little to change my view. Awful rubbish, and straight out of the romcom poster playbook's deleted chapters...
8. What's The Worst That Can Happen? (2001)

What's The Worst That Can Happen? This poster? Nope, the film's even worse, sadly. To be fair, it lost us at the words 'Martin' and 'Lawrence'. Danny DeVito deserves better.
7. Hancock (2008)

Big face #1. I know it's kind of essential to but the star on the poster, especially when it's one as big as Will Smith, but this extreme close-up of his face is a bit much. You have to wonder what he's doing to have such a strained expression on his face.
6. Chapter 27 (2007)

Big face # 2. For this one we get a close-up of a hardly-endearing shot of Jared Leto's face. Marvellous. In this film he plays the man with the same surname as me (no relation, though!), who killed John Lennon. Not that the poster - even with that small line at the top - particularly gets that cross.
5. Whatever Works (2009)

Love Woody Allen, love Larry David, but hate this. I really wanted to see this, but I don't think that it has been released over here yet. Shame, really. The combination of Woody Allen and Larry David will, no doubt, produce some comedy joy. But this poster looks like a bad Facebook snap.
4. Good Luck Chuck (2007)

A poster that matches the awfulness of the film. Good work in that sense, I suppose. I think I find this so offensive because I object to the fact that it's mimicking an iconic picture of John and Yoko that featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. And not very well, either.
3. Bangkok Dangerous (2008)

I really like the original Bangkok Dangerous, but this Nic Cage re-make was pretty bad. I have no idea what's happening in this poster. Is that an invisible gun in Cage's hand? Why is he reaching into his coat? Does he have an itch? That must be it. That would certainly explain the look on his face.
2. One Missed Call (2008)

Shit horror movies are often accompanied by equally shit posters, but what the hell is going on here?! I have no idea what it will sound like when I do, but I sure hope it doesn't look like that.
1.The Blue Lagoon (1980)

In fairness, this is somewhere inbetween amazing and terrible. I think text on posters should be kept to a minimum, not take up half of the space. Then again, what's written is really quite brilliant. I'm sure you'll all be pleased to hear that the poster for the sequel is equally bad. A little less heavy on the text, perhaps, but again what's written is brilliant.
So there are my choices for some of the worst movie posters. I'm sure you'll all be able to recommend some classics. Please leave your suggestions below, and we might just do a follow-up piece...
