Bruce Willis doing Die Hard 5 next year?

Bruce Willis has confirmed that he’s planning a fifth Die Hard movie. That’s as good as the news gets, though…

As he undertakes promotional duties for his incoming cop comedy Cop Out (directed by Kevin Smith, of course), Bruce Willis has revealed to MTV that he's planning on a fifth Die Hard movie, and that it could be shooting as soon as next year. This is some turnaround: after the third film, Die Hard With A Vengeance, Willis was notoriously reluctant to reprise the role of John McClane a fourth time, and as it turned out, it took over a decade before he went near the franchise again.

Yet, Die Hard 4.0/Live Free Or Die Hard (depending where in the world you live) - which we enjoyed a lot more than we were expecting to - turned into the most commercially successful entry into the franchise again. Even though it pretty much went against the origins of the franchise, given that it turned the central character into the beefed up superhero he never really was. But since then, Willis hasn't ruled out reprising the role of McClane again.

Now it looks like that's going to happen. He told MTV, "I think we're going to do a Die Hard 5 next year," adding that he's looking to broaden the story still further: "Well it's got to go worldwide," he reasoned.

Here's the bit that set our alarm bells blaring a little, though. For Willis then said, "But I like so much more making fun of it, taking the piss out of it and not making it a big deal. Not making the fact that I've acted in a lot of movies a big deal. It's all illusion and it's all bullshit and it's a great job for me to have, but everything else you can set on fire. Making people laugh is the real deal."

Hmmm. I've always enjoyed the humour in the Die Hard movies, certainly, but I'd be curious to see just what Willis means here. Is he just underplaying the role a little, or is he suggesting that Die Hard is on the road to self-parody (which some would argue it did with the last film)? I'm loathed to read too much into his words, and would happily be there day one for a new Die Hard movie. But is he really going to do the next film just to have a laugh at it? I doubt it, but his words, perhaps, do him no favours here.

Incidentally, Willis also notes that he'd call back Len Wiseman, the director of the fourth film, to do the next one. But, obviously, there's been no confirmation or mention of the project from Mr Wiseman himself.

Here's the piece at MTV...

Hmmm. Odd statement to make I thought from him. It's OK accepting that the business he's in is all about entertainment and 'making people laugh' but watching the clip he seems a bit too blase about it all. Has he forgotten that John McClane made his career? I'm not suprised that they are doing a fourth but please don't take it worldwide - the whole point of Die Hard is clautrophibic set pieces - and please don't up the comedy ante.

Not that I'd want it to descend into outright comedy or parody (and yeah, a LOT of 4.0 seems like a piss take), but I wouldn't mind laughing in a Die Hard film again. McClane was just NOT funny in the last one. The almost total lack of f-bombs and other swearing and Bruce playing it very internalised made McClane a shadow of his former self.

i thought 4 was good but nowere near the level of the orignal, i want to see willis locked down again. And I can see this working well within a casino in vegas. I hate "bigger" because I find the bigger you make it the sillier it becomes. And Mclain (If I got that right), should die hard at the end of it!

I liked 4 better than 3 tbh, of course sequel each gets that bit more far fetched so there is a creative limit limit but Bruce can probably pull off one more before he hinmself becomes to old for us to suspend disbelief.

I don't see how the series can survive going "bigger" than the ludicrous het sequence in the 4th, which is already well past the point of disbelief. McClane will end up fighting aliens at this rate.

The 4th was only good if watched uncut. I couldn't even imagine only having seen the theatrical version!! And I really don't know what to think about his comments...but I mean parody is pretty much the only way to go if you're going to try to top fighting a jet...

McClane should be trapped in small, confined spaces, i.e climbing the elevatorshaft of a skyscraper or crawling through the airvents of an airport, taking out the baddies one by one.. the reluctant right man at the wrong place equipped with a personal motive for his actions; wife held as hostage or whatnot.. that's what made the first movie and first half of the second movie so great.. as soon he's out in the open, acting like the savior of the world, everything tends to fall apart.. this "it's got to go worldwide"-nonsense does not bode well.
