Geek shows and movies on UK TV in the coming week

David Mitchell hosts new panel show The Bubble, Survivors comes to an end, and there are some great movies in the week ahead, too...

Published on Feb 18, 2010

We'd usually break out in an uncomfortable rash at the mention of any celeb-based competition show, the single exception being those filled with comedians. But when David Mitchell is hosting the shebang, we'll gladly have a look in just on the strength of his unceasing sarcastic wit in everything we've witnessed him in thus far.

Tonight, Friday February 19th at 10:00pm on BBC2, David Mitchell hosts the first of a new six-part panel show that keeps this week's guests Frank Skinner, Reginald D Hunter and Victoria Coren oblivious to the worldly goings-on outside The Bubble, and then quizzes each with preposterously improbable news stories. The guests must guess which are true and which are fabricated. Float or burst, we'll be there.

This week also sees the second Survivors series reach the end of the tarmac on Tuesday February 23rd at 9:00pm when the conclusion to the struggle can be seen on BBC1. Whether or not the remaining Family will make it to a safe haven is up in the air, as a frantic confrontation on an airfield threatens the alternately cosy and clashing group's future.

A repeat performance of a BBC Drama series first shown in 2003 will be broadcast, this time on ITV3, starting Wednesday 24th February at 10:00pm. The series, a modern retelling of six Canterbury Tales, first features James Nesbitt and Billie Piper in The Miller's Tale, set in a karaoke pub (where else!?). Future weeks' stories star John Simm, Keeley Hawes, Julie Walters, Bill Nighy, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Jonny Lee Miller among the cast of updated hourlong Chaucer stories for the Twitter age.

Lastly, on Thursday February 25th at 10:00, a quote-adult-unquote animation about international espionage entitled Archer debuts. From the short promo clip we've seen, it appears to be a blend of one part debonair Bond, to two parts clueless Anchorman, with a twist of rude served up in a 60s comic book-style cartoon. The half hour episodes premiere with Mole Hunt on Fiver.

Now, on to the films showing through the weekend and a bit beyond. As always, if we missed anything interesting, have a shout in the comments, with our thanks.

Went to the taping of the first episode of The Bubble. It was very funny (despite the best efforts of Victoria Coren) but I am curious to how much of 'the funny' will make the final cut. If nothing else, the lawyers are likely to have enforced a few cuts. Party poopers.

I was at the recording of The Bubble last night, and can vouch for it being really entertaining (edit-dependent). I'm not thrilled by the concept, and the lack of access to BBC news resources made the fake bulletins look really quite cheap and obvious, but Skinner, Hunter and Mitchell were well and truly on form. The less said about Victoria Coren, the better...
