My top 5 Pixar films

Mark Pickavance

Mark highlights his personal choice for Pixar's 5 best films. And you're warmly invited to do the same...

Published on Feb 18, 2010

I should state from the off, here: this is a very personal choice, with which many people will disagree. But these are the ones I like most, why they talk to me personally, and stand out in very auspicious company. So without further ado...

The Incredibles

Brad Bird came onboard Pixar with a track record that included directing and writing The Iron Giant and producing the screenplay for Batteries Not Included. It's Bird's energy for the fantastic that fills this movie with memorable characters and scenes, and delivers Pixar's most complete feature yet. Other Pixar productions have come close, but none have bettered The Incredibles.

Ratatouille

Brad Bird worked his magic a second time for Pixar on this beautifully crafted piece that created a new high-water mark in CGI complexity. In animations terms it presents a master class in character staging, subtle movement and finesse, while telling an engaging story with involving characters and plot. Ratatouille is a great movie, and a timeless classic.

Toy Story

I couldn't leave this out because, without this film, the rest might just have been fleeting notions in the heads of various Pixar people. It entirely re-wrote the rules on what CGI could feasibly do, and paved the way for a new golden era of animated film.

The technology, voice talents, script and characters all fell into place with Toy Story, and the world of motion pictures was never quite the same afterwards.

Monsters, Inc.

There is a purity about this movie that hits most adults right under the solar plexus, as it goes to the very heart of what it's like to be a young child. Superb voice casting of Billy Crystal and John Goodman elevate the simple narrative along with some elegant design work in creating the unique look of their characters. The animation of 'Boo' will touch any parent who still remembers their children that young.

Toy Story 2

The rarity of a sequel that in any way is equal to an original film should never be underestimated and, as such, Toy Story 2 deserves to be here. Taking the original concept of what it's like to be a toy to the next level, Buzz, Woody and the gang experience the darker side of rare toy ownership at Al's Toy Barn. More humour and more spectacular action made this a worthy successor to the original.

So what of the others? I like them all to varying degrees, with the possible exception of Cars. In that movie I find the design of the characters - putting eyes inside the windshields - unforgivably lazy.

A Bug's Life is good, but Antz, which came out the same year with a similar story, is actually better. Wall-E starts wonderfully and then goes rapidly downhill once he's onboard the spacecraft, sadly. Up is good, but personally I think that the last third of the film doesn't glue together entirely successfully. And most people's favourite, Finding Nemo, is just too sickly sweet in places for me, and I felt emotionally manipulated in places.

But given the things I've said about other studios work, the worst thing I've ever really said about a Pixar movie is that is isn't quite as brilliant as one of their others. I'm sure they'll make an animated disaster at some point, but I'm not laying odds for when that might be....

The Incredibles is easily my favourite. The only time I have bothered to look for every Easter egg on the DVD.I have to include Finding Nemo, sickly or not.I saw it first time in Spanish and thought Anabel Alonso was far superior to Ellen DeGeneres as the voice of Dory.Toy Story 1 and 2 for reasons similar to Mark Pickavance and finally Monsters Inc. as well, as I have fond memories of taking my kids to see it.

For me it's The Incredibles on top and in no particular order; Up, Toy Story 2, Wall-E, Monsters Inc. The one Pixar film that stands out for me, and NOT in a good way, is Cars. Just something I can't quite put my finger on about it. Apart from the 'merchandising' I was surprised it is getting the sequel treatment. Hoping it makes for a better film.

See now, I like Monsters Inc but not nearly as much as Toy Story. The quality of the two Toy Story movies is so close they deserve side by side listing. Also, I couldn't make my own such list without Wall-E or UP. I think the difference is that some Pixar films aim for the 'films parents will enjoy too' tag and some proudly pitched just at kids. The ones that work for me are the ones that parents will enjoy too and that is where Toy Story, UP, Wall-E fit. In fact, with Up and Wall-E, I will argue that Pixar is working hard to bring back the art of the (near) silent film.

I'm also not a fan of Cars. Just didn't do anything for me. Ratatouille, Incredibles & Toy Storys are my faves.

I'd actually place Toy Story 2 higher than the first. Nothing will ever be being 12 and watching that first 5 minutes. Pure gold. No one likes Cars, do they? I think it's a Brit/Yank thing to be honest. The Americans like that whole Nascar shit, but the character design is still craptacular. Wall-E is my absolute favourite with The Incredibles a very close second. Or maybe the other way round. Who cares.

I felt emotionally manipulated in places Isn't that the point of films?

Am I the only person who really didn't rate Ratatouille?

Toy Story 1&2, Finding Nemo and the Incredibles are my favourites. I thought Monsters was the worst and turned it off about half way through, which I hardly ever do. Cars was better on repeat viewings I have to say. WallE was dull and overrated IMO!

1 Toy Story 2 Finding Nemo 3 Wall-E 4 The Incredibles 5 Toy Story 2 Ratatouille is great, but doesn't stick. Up's second half is just not the movie I really anticipated and wanted it to be. I don't know really what I wanted, but megalomaniac villain chasing a bird and climax fight on top of a zeppelin? Nah, not the best choices. Still very enjoyable. Though. Just nothing touches the simplicity and joy, rulebreaking wonder of Toy Story 1. It's just perfect.

Yesssss, finally someone else who doesn't like Wall-E! For me the first half drags big time, and the second half is just generic. I like the points it tries to make, but the film just isn't fitting for them. :/

No the point of films is to emotionally manipulate in a way where the viewer doesn't immediately realise they're been tweaked, which Finding Nemo fails to disguise IMHO.

I'd go with my faves being; Wall-E, The Incredibles, Toy Story, Monsters Inc. and Toy Story 2. I too felt that Nemo was over the top emotional in many spots.

Top 5 in order: 5. Ratatouille, 4. Monsters Inc, 3. Toy Story 2, 2. Up, 1. Wall-E. While I'm sure some of that will change in the future, those top two never will, they are and will probably always be the best films Pixar have ever made.

I'm sure I'm running the risk of being torn down by trolls, but I'd like to defend Cars- At least two of Pixar's films are direct lifts from existing stories/movies. "Bug's Life" is an obvious lift of "7 Samarai" [Maybe more "3 Amigos" (Also á la "7 Samarai")]. "Cars" is a lift of the Michael J. Fox comedy "Doc Hollywood." It seems both are films that may (or may not) represent a "regrouping" of Pixar efforts and are not necessarily the most "original" of their efforts, e.g. "How do you follow up 'Toy Story'. Regardless, "Cars" is an appreciation of a life more "provincial"- much of which may or may not necessarily translate much outside the United States (Larry the Cable Guy barely translates within the U.S.) nor within a more geek-oriented realm. It does, however, speak, with a much clearer voice than most Pixar films, to younger children, which I myself have only recently, as a somewhat new parent, come to appreciate. As a child I played a lot with die-cast vehicles who, despite only being mechanisms, often seemed to have a life of their own. "Cars" seems to capture that spirit.
