MILD SPOILER AHEAD IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN AVATAR
As speculation over the Avatar sequels continues, there's one piece of firm news that's filtering through. And that's that James Cameron is set to write the prequel to Avatar later this year.
Producer Jon Landau confirmed the news to MTV, and also revealed that it's not a film we're talking about here, it's a novel. The book - which isn't a novelization of the movie in any sense - is set to fill in the backstory to Pandora. In the words of Landau, "It would be something that would lead up to telling the story of the movie, but it would go into much more depth about all the stories that we didn't have time to deal with - like the schoolhouse and Sigourney teaching at the schoolhouse; Jake on Earth and his backstory and how he came here; [the death of] Tommy, Jake's brother; and Colonel Quaritch, how he ended up there and all that."
Landau reveals, too, that the novel may even arrive by the end of the year.
