New Dark Knight sequel rumours

What will we see from the next Batman film? The latest rumours for the Dark Knight follow-up have begun to circle…

Published on Feb 16, 2010

There's been some progress at last with regards the state of the next big screen adventure for Batman, given that we now know that David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan are working on a script for the film. We'd expect, although don't automatically assume, that this means Christopher Nolan is back on board for a third movie, too. All good there.

But what can we actually expect from a Dark Knight follow-up? Thanks to a source at Comic Book Movie - which hasn't been validated, so there's the usual pinch of salt to take - the story is beginning to take shape.

The site reports that the screenwriting in earnest is beginning this month, with the plot pretty much in shape. And here's where it gets juicy. For it's believed that the main villain in the next Batman film will be The Riddler, and that Arkham Asylum will be featured heavily in the story for the movie.

Furthermore, it's believed that we'll get to meet Dr Fries (although not Mr Freeze, presumably being saved for the fourth film in this particular Batman saga - that'd bode well...) and The Penguin, with Barbara Gordon's role being beefed up. Dick Grayson may appear too.

And here's the potential biggie. It was announced last week that Christopher Nolan was being brought in as a "Godfather" figure for the next Superman cinematic revival, and as such, Metropolis and Lex Luthor could be namechecked in the next Batman film.

How much of that is true? Couldn't tell you. The Riddler certainly fits the Nolan approach to the films, and the introduction of Superman elements would please Warner Bros no end. Read the full report at Comic Book Movie here and make your own mind up, but don't expect anything official until Christopher Nolan is done and dusted with this summer's Inception...

i always thought the riddler as a serial killer leaving riddles at his murders.its in keeping with what nolan has created so far.

The Riddler and Arkham I can see Nolan doing something interesting with. Mr Fries, Dick Grayson?, this sounds like Joel Schumacher stuff. Hard to believe.

The Riddler has been a rumored character (along with Penguin) for awhile. I'd lean towards more of a Catwoman storyline. They want lightning to strike twice after Heath's performance. I thought Bale was on record saying that he'd be out if Robin even appeared on paper! Nolan's "vision" of Batman and Gotham City has NO room for an alien child from Krypton!

Nah, Riddler fits - but Nolan said he doubts The Penguin will appear in his series because the character to too fantasy. This article looks like it's a case of "throw everything into one article and then when 1 or 2 things turns out to be true, we can say Told You So!". I like the previous poster's comment about Riddler as a serial killer. Defo turn to the dark side & fitting of Nolan's Batman. No Penguin, no Robin, no Poison Ivy (or any other characters from Schumacher's films). Thank you.

My vote is for Dr. (Harley) Quinn as at least one villain. Catwoman would be good as well as Riddler but please NO big names like Leo, Depp, or Jolie.

Riddler as serial killer would work. Harley Quinn as leader of a cult of Joker wannabies would also fit nicely. Equally a tale of two catwomen, one killer the other thief might offer some detective work to determine they are not just some schitzophrenic individual but all need enough impact to pose a threat and I'd rather not have too many at once tyvm....I am uneasy with any suggstion of the thoroughly unrealistic Superman entering the Nolanverse of Batman.

Considering DK ended with the Chief of Police and Batman absolutely pulling the wool over Gotham's eyes....I'd say the Riddler would most certainly figure out the ruse and expose Batman and Gordon to the public.

Neil Patrick Harris as Riddler, Charlize Theron as Catwoman, money in the bank.

Nolan already said he'd never do anything with Dick Grayson, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but Gordon's daughter isn't named Barbra in Nolan's Batman, his wife is. Unless the Gordon's are the most unimaginative parents ever and named both their kids after each other, which sounds absurd. I'm also pretty sure that Nolan also said that his Batman doesn't/wouldn't fit into a DC universe like Marvel is doing. In saying all that, this is still a studio movie so all that would be thrown out the window in 3 seconds if it meant more money.

I don't think Superman himself would really fit in this more realistic universe (although we don't know that such things can't exist there, just because we haven't seen them yet) but a more general reference like, the city of Metropolis for example, would work.

Re: martinqblank Spot On. That sounds like a great idea, getting back to Batman's detective roots without going all Supervillian with some Cartoon Mister Freeze. Although they could dig up Vincent Price and do Egghead.

I was with you at least as far as Riddler + Arkham. Mr. Freeze + Dick Grayson + Superman namecheck? Never in a million years. Just fits into the same school of rumour spreadingt that gave us "Shia LeBeouf as Robin!" or "Eddie Murphy as Riddler!"

i hope they go for the "hush storyline" (Google it) they've pretty much got all the elements set up, i can see that fitting nicely into the nolan saga

I think the idea of a villain finding out his identity so soon is bad, but the Riddler WAS one of the first to find out in the comics, nuking the Batcave as I remember it. The problem with the Riddler is that he's essentially a weenie and a minor villain so far; if they re-make him, his very CHARACTER could be rebooted and improved. Still too early for Dick Grayson, though.

Also: I like the idea of Johnny Depp as Riddler, but only if he takes the role as seriously as Ledger took the Joker and really develops the persona. The tone of the movie would differ from the first two because Riddler isn't known for having hordes of henchmen or hand-to-hand combat. It would be more of a mystery and intrigue thing.
