News round-up: Riddick, Rapunzel, Kevin Smith, Nicolas Cage, 21 Jump Street, Arthur

Lots of news, including Disney’s Rapunzel getting a name change, the latest on Cop Out, and Nicolas Cage’s Season Of The Witch moving to make room for Kick-Ass…

Published on Feb 15, 2010

* It's been confirmed by Variety that a third Riddick film is now formally in the works. It's a project that had been discussed before by director David Twohy and star Vin Diesel. The new film will simply be called Riddick, and inevitably will be a lower budget production from the 2004 flop The Chronicles Of Riddick (more in the style of Pitch Black too, with a bit of luck). No word yet on when production will start, but Diesel has the fifth Fast & Furious film to make first...

* The title of this November's Disney animated feature Rapunzel is no longer Rapunzel. It's still based on the Rapunzel story, but the name of the film has now been switched to Tangled. The film gets its US release in November.

* Kevin Smith has revealed that he took a pay cut in order to get his forthcoming action-comedy Cop Out an R-rating in the States. The director said on his Twitter posts that he'd taken a pay chop of 80%, else it would have been a PG-13 movie.

* The forthcoming Nicolas Cage film, Season Of The Witch, has been put back from its original March 19th release date. The film, which looked thoroughly barmy from where we're sat, has reportedly been moved to give another Nic Cage project, Kick-Ass, a bit more breathing room. Wise: Kick-Ass is awesome, and it's out at the start of April. Seriously: it's going to be tricky for any of the year's big films to get anywhere close to it.

* The movie version of the TV show 21 Jump Street - which launched a young actor called Johnny Depp into the world, of course - has been set for an August 5th 2011 release date. Jonah Hill will be starring.

* The rumoured remake of Arthur with Russell Brand in the title role is apparently still in the works. A script is being written by Peter Baynham (Bruno, Borat), and the current casting plan is to cast Meryl Streep in the equivalent, female version of the role so memorably taken by John Gielgud in the original. More here.

"21 Jump Street - which launched a young actor called Johnny Depp into the world" NONSENSE! I think you'll fine he was in A Nightmare on Elm Street a full three years before Jump St started.

The Chronicles of Riddick was a flop? Wow! I liked it, it had a nice style and Vin Diesel did well, must have been a financial flop in the U.S. because here in Brazil it did rather well.
