Neil Marshall’s Centurion: the trailer

The first trailer for the new film from Neil Marshall, Centurion, arrives. It looks really rather good, too…

"I am a soldier of Rome! I will not yield!"

Could Neil Marshall be one of the planet's finest exponents of stretching a small-ish budget a long, long way? Because this trailer for his new film Centurion looks, bluntly, far more expensive than it probably was.

Starring Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, Olga Kurylenko, Noel Clarke and David Morrissey, the film tells the tale of an army of Roman warriors, known as the Ninth Legion, who simply disappeared. The film picks up their story, and as you can see from the trailer, throws them head first into what looks like a terrific battle.

We're looking forward to this one a lot, and this strong trailer does nothing to dampen that. The film itself arrives on 23rd April.

You should include the words ‘loosely based on’ somewhere in there. As far as I know the Ninth legion didn’t disappear but they were certainly slaughtered, suffering about 80% causalities. However that loss lead directly to the Battle of Wattling Street where the heavily outnumber Romans wiped the floor with the ancient British, ending all local resistance and starting a 300 year period of complete Roman rule. On the whole I’ve far more sympathy for the tribes people rather than the invading Romans.

totally agree with the poster above. We're supposed to empathise with the invading Roman army??

Historians suggest that they didn't get killed in Britain at all, but more likely in Israel during the third revolt or possibly during a squabble in areas of Persia. Anywho, they should have at least said that it was based on a novel as opposed to making it seem like it's historically based. And as for sympathizing with the natives or the Romans, keep in mind how many great movies are made about the Romans (i.e. Gladiator) and how many abysmal movies are made about ancient cultures being invaded (i.e. Pathfinder). I just hope Marshall can redeem himself after the ungodly 'Doomsday', which is one of the worst films I've ever encountered.

I am looking forward to this, no its not a historical movie and as has been pointed out no-one really knows what happened to the 9th Legion.... I am just hoping for a good movie (unlike Doomsday which had a couple of comedic moments but for entirely the wrong reason) and some characters who I can care about.

Eagle of the Ninth was one of my favourite books as a kid, Read it (and the sequel) over and over again. This... does not even remotely related to the story told by the book. What a waste.
