Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol movie presses ahead

Simon Brew

Will Tom Hanks return as Robert Langdon, as the movie version of The Lost Symbol starts its path to the big screen…?

Published on Feb 4, 2010

It's surely, to date, got to go down as one of the most laborious, tedious franchises to date. Kicking off with The Da Vinci Code and continuing with Angels & Demons, the cinematic adaptations of Dan Brown's books have taken themselves ridiculously seriously, oblivious to the fact that they're really quite dull for long stretches, that it's staggering they've made quite as much money as they have.

But the two films have put lots of money into the bank for Sony, and even the previously sequel-shy Tom Hanks (Toy Story aside) came back on-board easily enough. And thus, the cinematic adventures of Robert Langdon and his haircuts are set to continue, as Sony is pushing ahead with the film version of Brown's latest book, The Lost Symbol.

Variety reports that the studio has hired Steven Knight, the writer of Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises, to pen the screenplay for the new film, which sees Langdon battling the symbols of the Freemasons this time. Tom Hanks hasn't yet committed to the project, but there seems to be not much in the way of doubt that he will. Likewise, director Ron Howard is a fair bet to return as well.

The book is apparently the fastest selling adult novel of all time, and hence Sony is keen to capitalise on that as soon as it can. Try to make the film a bit interesting this time, though?

The Lost Symbol?! Sorry, I lost interest after the long chase through ten churches last time.

The first book (and movie) had a plot. It also challenged the church and long held beliefs, all good fun stuff. The second seemed like watching someone else's scavenger hunt. There was nothing in the way of a plot (that i noticed anyway) it just seemed like going to the gold mine after the gold was gone. I can't imagine this being any better.

what are you talking about? dull ? not interesting? you have obviously not been watching the same movies or reading the same books as the people in ireland. how many books or films have such a well thought out plot? in the first movie, they talked more while moving less, so their aim in the second movie WAS to have a chase through many churches with more of a running out of time feeling. and i dont know if ive ever learned so much from a fictional story, and they make religion so much more interesting. the ending of angels and demons was so unexpected it was such a shock, but it was brilliant. you people do not appreciate a good story. also, how many authers leave the country for research for their books? Dan Brown started research on a trip to italy with his wife, and then returned 3 times for the book. thats dedication.these stories are excelent because each new one is every bit as interesting and well thought out as the last. i hope it does become a movie, and i know it will be as well recieved as the last.

I would agree with Maroon these books/movies are not just great stories but they have actual facts. Im not a big fan of reading but after reading Angels and Demons I could not put the book down, and from there I have read the next two and they get better as they go…. You don't become the fastest selling adult novel for writing shitty books.

For those that are not in agreement with this film, I think you have to consider the limited education and attention span of the American people. Those interested in stories that have a historical plot are going to find this film highly entertaining if they have been at all following the "fictional" works of noted author Dan Brown.

Those who didn't like Angels And Demons must be Catholic...No offence! I loved the Davinci Code and Angels and Demons. I have all three books and I have both movies and when The Lost Symbol comes out on DVD I will have too! I can't wait to see this movie! I've been waiting for the moment for the movie release! I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas!

I am Catholic and I LOVED ANGELS AND DEMONS. I also love the DaVinci Code. Tom Hanks is phenomenal. However as of July 27, 2011, it was said that Ron Howard will not direct The Lost Symbol. :(( I am not happy. I just hope that the movie will be good.
