Avatar DVD details and release date hints start to emerge

James Cameron’s Avatar will be on DVD before the summer, it’s been confirmed...

Published on Feb 3, 2010

As the film continues to sweep all before it at the box office, attention is beginning to turn to when we can expect Avatar to arrive on DVD and Blu-ray.

There's already been talk of the extended and cut material that James Cameron wants to include on the disc, including a Na'Vi sex scene that didn't make the final print of the film. And the rumour mill suggests that we may end up with two releases of the film at different points this year (although that's not been confirmed yet).

We do know that plans are definitely afoot to get a DVD and Blu-ray of the film out this side of the summer, however, and Rupert Murdoch - as part of News Corporation's quarterly earnings call - has revealed that the film will be on disc before the end of June. The initial release definitely won't be in 3D, however, and that's likely to mean a future 3D release some way down the road.

Details of the exact release date are being kept quiet (we're guessing April/May ourselves), as you might expect given the cinematic performance of the film. But we hope to have firmer news in the next week or two. We're interrogating our sources right now...

Will the marketing men be able to restrain from putting "Outrageous Extended cut not seen in the cinemas with Na'Vi Sex Scene!" on the front? Why are people getting so excited about a CGI sex scene? its weird....

Can we also please get "the" version Cameron wants on DVD/Blue Ray the first time, instead of the endless double and triple dips of past films? Everyone rushes out to get the DVD on that first day of release, then 6 months later, surprise, surprise, we get an Ultimate Edition, then a Platinum Edition, then a Director's Cut, then a Stupendous Anniversary Director's Cut Limited Diamond Edition...
