Sam Raimi tackling The Shadow?

Simon Brew

Is director Sam Raimi jumping from the world of Spider-Man into that of The Shadow?

Published on Feb 1, 2010

Interesting one, this. Sam Raimi is reportedly keen to stay within the world of comic books and superheroes in spite of his departure from the world of cinematic Spider-Man. And the latest rumour suggests he's circling a new film of The Shadow.

The Shadow was, of course, memorably turned into an absolutely hilarious (but not deliberately so) movie in the 90s by director Russell Mulcahy, with Alec Baldwin in the leading role. Seriously, I rank it as one of my guiltiest of guilty pleasures, and the ridiculous fight with the Gremlins knock-off near the end has to be up there as my favourite moment in the entire film. It shocked nobody when no sequel was forthcoming.

For Raimi, a new take on The Shadow is a film that's likely to be closer in feel to his earlier superhero flick Darkman than the world of Spider-Man. And IESB has reported that he's now circling the project with a view to direct. The site has also taken a look at the script written by Siavash Farahanl, and was very positive about it. Raimi is currently down as producer only, but in the words of the story, "We are hearing from our sources that Raimi is itching to get back in the director's chair ASAP and wants The Shadow to be his next directorial feature."

This makes sense. He originally wanted to make The Shadow but couldn't get the rights / Universal interested, so instead created his own character "Darkman" instead. Alec Baldwin - he's Chinese!

Wasn't Raimi looking to get ahold of some other Pulp properties sometime back? I'll be there for his take on The Shadow and would love to see him do The Avenger and Captain Future.

W00t!!! I’d love to see Raimi take on the Shadow. Of all of the pulp heroes The Shadow has always been the most interesting and the most important. After all without the Lamont Cranston (or Kent Allard) there would have been no Bruce Wayne. Also apparently Alan Moore has credited The Shadow as one of the key influences for the creation of V!! So if someone could do a Shadow film properly, and that’s taking nothing from the’94 effort which I like a lot, it has to be Raimi.
