News round up: Facebook, Cop Out, George Lucas, Shane Black, Keanu Reeves, Quentin Tarantino & the Apple iPad

Lots of news stories all digested into one post! Not for the first time, it’s been a busy few days in the world of movies…

* The so-called Facebook movie, The Social Network, is arriving on screens a little sooner than first thought. Written by Aaron Sorkin, directed by David Fincher and starring Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake, the film has moved up two weeks to a 1st October release date in the States.
* Less pleasing is the news that Kevin Smith's Cop Out is heading to the UK two months behind its US release. The film arrives stateside on 26th February, but the UK doesn't get it until 16th April. Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan star.
* LucasFilm is, according to the Hollywood Reporter, working on an animated musical. Kevin Munroe is reported to be directing, and the project is believed to be in the early stages of production. It's unclear right now how involved George Lucas has been involved either...
* Great news, this. Shane Black is directing another film for the first time since Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. He's also set to reteam with Mel Gibson (Black wrote the original Lethal Weapon movie, of course) for Cold Warrior, about a spy from the Cold War who comes out of retirement. He then teams up with a young agent, as they fight to save the world. Given that Black is writing, and Black is directing, its chances of being awesome are quite high.
* Keanu Reeves is heading back to science fiction with Passengers, a film that's apparently a love story that happens to be set on a spaceship. The movie has been penned by Jon Spaihts, who's also done the script for the new Alien film Fox is trying to get off the ground, and Gabriele Muccino is down to direct.
* Helen Mirren has denied reports that she's been approached by Quentin Tarantino to star in his next movie. It had been reported that QT had approached her about a medieval film where she would play a potty-mouth queen. But when MTV got to her to ask her what the score was? "I wish," she said. "I should be so lucky." There you have it...
* Apple has launched its iPad, you know? Every other website in the world seems to be talking about it, and we felt left out. We're not going to buy one, of course, but just thought that on the off chance that you didn't know that Apple had launched a new product, we should let you know. Job done.
