Avatar: now officially the top grossing film ever

Simon Brew

James Cameron has, once more, made the top grossing film of all time, as Avatar topples Titanic from the top spot in a matter of weeks…

Published on Jan 26, 2010

Less than two months after it was released, James Cameron's Avatar has now officially become the top grossing movie of all time. The film passed Titanic's $1.84bn global box office haul on Monday, with its current total standing at $1.843bn and growing. It's certain now that Avatar will be the first film to cross the $2bn mark at the global box office, and within two weeks at most, it should also have beaten Titanic's $600.8m take to become the biggest grossing film of all time in the US too.

The UK alone has added over $90m to the global pot, with France chipping in a cool $124.8m as the film's biggest non-US territory. Over two thirds of its money across the world seems to have come at 3D screenings, a factor that seems to have lots of people suddenly considering adding a 3D element to their own films past and future.

Of course, if you put Avatar side by side with Titanic on ticket sales alone, then it still trails the big boat by some distance. The average ticket price has risen more than 50% since Titanic was released, and then there's the premium levied on most 3D screenings of the film too to take into account. Adjust for inflation too and on US grosses, Avatar is about to overtake Grease and The Lion King, as it currently sits in 26th place.

However, countering that is the fact that most of the films that sit in the higher portions of the inflation-adjusted listed haven't been released in an era where films tend to get copied and uploaded to the Internet. That said, given the fact that most seem keen to see Avatar in 3D, then Hollywood may have found - albeit temporarily - a proper deterrent to piracy in 3D technology.

The competition facing Avatar over the coming weeks continues to be slight, and we suspect that James Cameron's movie has a lot of money to make yet before it starts its descent towards the DVD market....

Can't say this is a disappointment.

Great. Not priorly for the movie itself as an artcraft . Great for the movie industry that we rely on and specifficaly at the Sci-Fi arena. On perspective this is the first time that a Sci-Fi movie make´s so much money and will grab loads of prizes. Let´s hail for that. Imagine if Star Wars would won Oscars? Or Matrix was nominated for Golden Globe? With this mind set i expect that the next years we going to see a renaisence of Science Fiction on the big screen. The gears are already moving: John Carter of Mars, Duna, Heavy Metal, Judge Dread, Aliens The Prequel, Robocop among others are just coming. So thank you Mr. Cameron, your movie is not a master-piece but your are brilliant.

And the world still has Cameron's nuts in it's mouth. Will this madness ever end?

Will this madness ever end? Sure, when the world bites down. But, what's the problem? Even if you don't like Avatar and/or Cameron, as Alexandre indicates, in the short term the film industry will now throw huge piles of cash at even more SF projects. I'm having trouble considering this a problem.. I love SF. :)

Great point, Alexandre. Avatar will inject a lot of enthusiasm for SciFi projects - not that SciFi ever really died down... And don't forget the amount of B-Movie junk that will also follow. Most excellent! Thank you Mr. Cameron. You did it before with T2, Aliens and The Abyss. You clearly love SciFi and for all your faults the true geek still loves you!

Yeah, good points really. Even if I don't personally give a stuff about Avatar (don't hate it, just don't care) it might open up the doors for some worthy sci-fi projects that otherwise might not have made it. That would be great.

FOUND: http://rikijo.blogspot.com The occultic meaning of the word "Avatar" is really Lucifer/Satan. -That alone should have raised eyebrows, but it didn't lol -Think about that for a minute..what would happen if James Cameron just named the film -SATAN- ...would people then want to consider the real meaning behind the film? The entire Movie/Entertainment industry is a well financed satanic psychological war operation being executed upon the public right before their eyes. Just like all the other Illuminati controlled industry, the Movie/Entertainment industry is a tool designed to advance their agenda of a "New World Order" and the deceptions that come along with it. In the satanic Illuminati occult dogma, the term "AVATAR" represents their coming Anti-christ, and is the Illuminati occult representation of Satan incarnate. The Illuminati believe that through science they will be able to genetically produce a "Body" or "Host" that can then be possessed by the actual spirit of Lucifer/Satan. This "host" that the spirit of Satan will inhabit is called the "AVATAR" James Cameron has actually named his entire film project based around the satanic doctrines of demonic possession and modern DNA manipulation, in which the Illuminati seek to bring about the "New Age humanoid", or demonically possessed biological human entity.

In days long gone by loonies like madpasses would have burnt women at the stake for having a black cat. If he was born in the mid east he would be spouting a certain religion with equal blind fervor. His little story actually sounds like a good script for AVatar 2. At least it's not Pocohantas 2 the journey to London.
