News round-up: Machete, Planet Of The Apes, Conan, Clash Of The Titans, Twilight Eclipse

We’ve got Twilight! We’ve got Machete! We’ve got Mickey Rourke! We’ve got a news round-up for you!

Published on Jan 25, 2010

It's been a busy weekend for movie news, given that the Sundance Film Festival is now in full swing. Here's a round-up of what's been happening...

* Robert Rodriguez's eagerly-awaited (by us, anyway) Machete has found a distributor. The film, which Rodriguez has co-directed with Ethan Maniquis, has an Expendables-good cast, including Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Steven Seagal, Rose McGowan, Jeff Fahey, Don Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and Lindsay Lohan. And, after a bit of a bidding war, Fox has picked up the rights to distribute the film in the US (Sony already had UK rights, we understand). Expected release is in April.

* Over at Vulture, the site is reporting that Fox is still toying with a new Planet Of The Apes movie. The latest news on the project is that a new writer Street Kings' Jamie Moss - has been brought on board to work with a draft previously put together by Scott Frank. Furthermore, the original writers of the script, Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, have also been brought back to work on the film. Scott Frank was also down to direct at one point, but he's since left the project, with a new director due to be recruited shortly. More on the story here.

* One of the most talked about films of the Sundance Film Festival thus far, the thriller Buried, has been picked up by Lionsgate. Starring Ryan Reynolds, the film is about a contractor working in Iraq who's kidnapped. When he awakes, he's in a coffin buried in the desert. And that's nowhere near the ending. We'll keep you posted as to a release date.

* An update on the Conan movie casting that we were talking about at the end of last week. We now know that Jason Momoa has been cast in the title role, but Latino Review is suggesting that Mickey Rourke has been offered the role of his father, Codril. No decision has yet been forthcoming from the actor though, it seems.

* Warner Bros is toying with the idea of adding 3D to Clash Of The Titans at the last minute. Director Louis Letterier is reported as saying that he feels there's not enough time to do the work, but given the staggering numbers that Avatar has been bringing in - helped by the premium ticket price for 3D screenings - the studio is still considering the option. A decision is set to be made in the next week. If it does go ahead, our hopes won't be high: Avatar was built from the ground up with 3D in mind, and it wasn't a last minute retrofit.

* Finally, Howard Shore has been brought in to do the score to the next Twilight film, Eclipse. Shore is best known for his scores to the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, but we're mighty fond of his work on Tim Burton's Ed Wood in these parts. Twilight: Eclipse, which has long finished shooting, will be released in June.

A new Planet of the Apes movie written by the guy who wrote Street Kings. Put a bullet in my brain now and save me the horror of this being released

Strange, the other day I was thinking that enough time had passed since the last Apes film that the studio would say something like "Well the stink from the last one has died down, now we can go ahead with a new one." Looks like I was right.
