George Lucas to press ahead with 3D Star Wars movies?

James Cameron’s Avatar seems to have persuaded George Lucas that it’s time that the Star Wars movies jumped aboard the 3D bandwagon…

Never has there been a bearded man in the world with such a talent for selling you basically the same thing over and over again (Santa excluded). Now that he's got no more Star Wars movies to make, and given that he's basically got one more shot at Indiana Jones after Crystal Skull to keep people interested, the man Lucas has found a predictable way to keep himself busy. And that's with the long-mooted 3D versions of Star Wars.
Even in the aftermath of Avatar, the whole notion of 3D being an addition to modern cinema is surely up for debate (seriously: can you name more than three films in the last year that it's made any kind of tangible difference to?), but that hasn't stopped studios and film makers looking through their back catalogues to try and retrofit 3D to them. James Cameron is working on Titanic 3D, for instance, and a personal favourite of mine, Disney's Beauty And The Beast, is getting the 3D treatment this year. The things they do to add a couple of quid to the ticket price.
Lucas was collared on the way into the Golden Globes and asked about Star Wars, Avatar and 3D. Interestingly, he declared that, for a while, he hadn't been a fan of 3D movies, but seeing Avatar seems to have changed his mind. "We've been looking for years and years and years of trying to take Star Wars and put it in 3-D. But technology hasn't been there. We've been struggling with it, but I think this [Avatar] will be a new impetus to make that happen."
Now, granted, that's hardly him saying they're heading off to make 3D versions of the films there and then, but it seems likely that Lucas will at least try and get a 3D version of A New Hope on the big screen in the next couple of years. He's rarely been shy about selling us differing versions of his films, and this seems like too obvious a way to rake in a few more bucks for him to pass up. We'll keep you posted...
