George Lucas to press ahead with 3D Star Wars movies?

Simon Brew

James Cameron’s Avatar seems to have persuaded George Lucas that it’s time that the Star Wars movies jumped aboard the 3D bandwagon…

Published on Jan 20, 2010

Never has there been a bearded man in the world with such a talent for selling you basically the same thing over and over again (Santa excluded). Now that he's got no more Star Wars movies to make, and given that he's basically got one more shot at Indiana Jones after Crystal Skull to keep people interested, the man Lucas has found a predictable way to keep himself busy. And that's with the long-mooted 3D versions of Star Wars.

Even in the aftermath of Avatar, the whole notion of 3D being an addition to modern cinema is surely up for debate (seriously: can you name more than three films in the last year that it's made any kind of tangible difference to?), but that hasn't stopped studios and film makers looking through their back catalogues to try and retrofit 3D to them. James Cameron is working on Titanic 3D, for instance, and a personal favourite of mine, Disney's Beauty And The Beast, is getting the 3D treatment this year. The things they do to add a couple of quid to the ticket price.

Lucas was collared on the way into the Golden Globes and asked about Star Wars, Avatar and 3D. Interestingly, he declared that, for a while, he hadn't been a fan of 3D movies, but seeing Avatar seems to have changed his mind. "We've been looking for years and years and years of trying to take Star Wars and put it in 3-D. But technology hasn't been there. We've been struggling with it, but I think this [Avatar] will be a new impetus to make that happen."

Now, granted, that's hardly him saying they're heading off to make 3D versions of the films there and then, but it seems likely that Lucas will at least try and get a 3D version of A New Hope on the big screen in the next couple of years. He's rarely been shy about selling us differing versions of his films, and this seems like too obvious a way to rake in a few more bucks for him to pass up. We'll keep you posted...

And cue all the complaining. I'm well up for re-releasing the films every decade. A chance to see it on a huge screen? Yes please. Add new stuff in every so often so it doesn't get stale? Go for it. 3D? Sure.

OMG i can see 10 years in to the future PRESENTING in re-imagined, digitally enhanced, 3D, 100% CGI with extra pointless scenes featuring Hayden Christensen and with the entire cast replaced with ewoks..... STAR WARS the re-re-re-re-re-re-re-release. and ofcourse another 10 years it will be "Presenting- the original trilogy completely unaltered in its original form because im george lucas and i know my fans ill run to cinema to see this and i can charge out the ass for it."

I think (I hope) George Lucas is kind of like Obi-Wan. Floating around out in the desert waiting for his next Big adventure. He is a supremely talented Man and it would be a shame if all he has left to offer is re-imaginings of previous work. Maybe being on set with Cameron will re-envigorate his creativity. He was once part of a quantum leap in cinema and could be again. Here's Hoping...

Sorry but anyone who isn't excited by the idea of the opening sequence of Starwars being done in 3D just ain't a geek at all.... Shame that Lucas will no doubt completely ruin the movie after that with annoying CGI sfx and 'undeleted' scenes that were deleted for a reason!

RE: Welshsceptic Come on, who wouldn't want to see any film with the entire cast replaced by ewoks?

Sorry, did you say 'Titanic 3D'? Now that's proof that there is no god.

The new musical number he added to Return of the Jedi was living proof that the man had gone off his rocker and Star Wars was headed for disaster.
