Avatar firmly on course to topple Titanic

Current running total for James Cameron’s Avatar: over $1.6bn and counting…
Published on Jan 19, 2010
If there was any doubt remaining about whether James Cameron's Avatar was going to overtake James Cameron's Titanic to become the biggest film of all time, then surely it was all but eradicated once the weekend box office numbers came in.
Yesterday, we reported in our US box office round-up that Avatar had added over $40m to its US total alone over the weekend, taking it up to $505.1m. That makes it the third biggest film of all time at the US box office, with The Dark Knight set to be trampled out the way in the next week with its $533m take. That leaves, in terms of US records, Titanic's $600.8m gross, and there seems little doubt that Avatar will be seizing that record before it's done. Heck, we wouldn't wager against $700m, the way the film seems to be retaining business.
As for the worldwide box office? Over the past weekend, $125m more came pouring in, taking the film's non-US total to $1.15bn. That overseas take alone would make the film the third biggest grossing film of all time, and added to the US total, Avatar's currently got $1.62bn in the bank. It's not unlikely that the next week will add at least another $100m to that, and by the end of January, Titanic's global haul of $1.842bn should be beaten. Expect Avatar to be crowned the first $2bn-grossing movie in history.
On top of that, there's the more lucrative DVD and Blu-ray market to come, too, where Avatar conservatively should be looking to make the same amount of money again (and more likely a whole lot more).
Avatar 2 it is then, Mr Cameron?
