James Cameron on Avatar sequels

Simon Brew

Get ready for Avatar 2 and Avatar 3, as James Cameron outlines his sequel plans…

Published on Jan 15, 2010

With the only question remaining about the commercial performance of James Cameron's Avatar being whether it will now topple Titanic to become the biggest film of all time, the man himself has been talking about his plans for a trilogy of films.

The current box office total for the film is $1.42bn and continuing to soar, and we can't help wondering whether it'll not only topple Titanic's $1.8bn, but perhaps even have a stab at the $2bn mark. Either way, James Cameron will have no trouble getting funding for his next film.

But will that film be Avatar 2? Yes, by the sounds of it. And an Avatar 3 as well. James Cameron, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, had the following to say on the matter: "I've had a storyline in mind from the start - there are even scenes in Avatar that I kept in because they lead to the sequel."

He continued by adding,"It just makes sense to think of it as a two or three film arc, in terms of the business plan. The CG plants and trees and creatures and the musculo-skeletal rigging of the main characters - that all takes an enormous amount of time to create. It'd be a waste not to use it again."

Already signed up for the next Avatar film is Sam Worthington, incidentally, although there's no clue as yet as to when Cameron plans to push the sequel forward.

Nothing better than cranking out more films to adhere to "the business plan". Can't think of a time THAT'S ever led to a shit movie.

Hopefully he's still going to continue with Battle Angel as well.

Does the sequel go, Earth space fleet turns up, nukes planet, get unobtainium without any issues? Because that's pretty much how it would go. Alternatively a less American version would be awesome, Hugh Grant as the English "Raj" in charge of the planet, so far have helped build schools, railways and given the natives enough arms to raise up against a third as yet undiscovered faction so that when Hugh does leave there's a civil war on the planet.

There was talks of Titanic 2 an alien ship was going to raise the ship and bring all the passengers back to life but with tails , they shelved it because Rick Moranis wouldn't play the lead.Seriously though i hope they don't ruin it.

His "business plan" comments are a bit disturbing. I dont see much room for sequels. Or at least, I didnt feel them setting it up. I mean there were certainly opportunities. Like when Giovanni Ribisi's character is leaving Pandora, he kind of just looks at Jake Sully. It was the perfect time for some power line dialouge and set up for the next film. He could have said something like "You know we'll be back, And with greater numbers. And we will not forget you" I dont know something. It was wide open for that. So when hes now saying, that he wants to do a sequel, im a bit stunned. But since i thought this movie was the most visually entertaining thing ive seen in years, I would see the sequel in a heartbeat.

Here's exactly what will happen: AVATAR 2 - Humans come back and nearly wipe out the Na'vi (realistic). Sad, Empire-like cliffhanger ending. AVATAR 3 - Na'vi regroup, on a different moon perhaps, and come back to kick human butt. The only question is, are there enough movies left for Cameron to steal plots from?

I've been visiting these forums for a while now, reading the Avatar articles with particular interest as I enjoy all your comments, though there is one annoying consistency throughout them thats starting to annoy like only a corporate movie exec arsehole can.... Ladies and gentlemen, multiple choice for you - Is gudge (a) James Cameron, or (b) James Cameron's bastard yet neglected lovechild, or (c) James Cameron's personal cocksucker, or (d) other, AND (HINT) YOU MUST PICK THIS ONE REGARDLESS (e) absolutely dull as fuck? Remember, multiple choice, but definately (e) in any case. Answers on a postcard please.

Isn't he supposed to be doing the Titanic sequels first?

Honestly, to the right of this story's front page headline is another concerning the rights to a certain killer cyborg franchise... Come on Mr. Cameron, you've got the money and the kudos - give us the Terminator sequel we deserve!

This one time... blah blah blah. Seriously, are you all so ready to gut Cameron's efforts with Avatar just because he would like to do a sequel. Pro tip: stop with the entitlement culture. The guy has been working on this concept for over a decade and he obviously loves it. His movies, as of late, have been shy on plot and heavy on spectacle. That is what you will get, sequel or not. Chill. Out.

there is loads of scope for sequels... it would be great to see the ravished Earth and them planning to kick thier `Savage blue arses'... bets on Sigourney weaver's Grace being reborn or speaking from the Tree of life

I am old enough to remember the upset editorials in magazines and from fans when Cameron said he was going to a sequel to the cult classic Terminator.... and what a pile of crud that turned out not to be..... Personally I loved Avatar despite its many plot holes, and the similarity to other stories/movies. I can't wait to see what Cameron will do for a sequel, I just expect the 3rd movie to be directed by someone else after the studio pushes him out for wanting to spend a trillion pounds on making the movie and instead hire some muppet who makes a lame movie that ignores everything that made the franchise great.

Or maybe he'll pull a Lucas and let someone else direct the sequel, which could be even greater, assuming his ego will let him do that.
