In the absence of a big new blockbuster release, it was down to Superbad to lead the weekend box office again. Meanwhile, The Invasion's nearly out the chart already...

Can’t you tell blockbuster season is over? With the only new releases in the States over the weekend being tame movies that have seemingly been looking for an appropriate release slot, it was perhaps no surprise that comedy Superbad retained its top position with $18m, for a running total of $68m. It comes out over here mid-September.Since last week, The Bourne Ultimatum and Rush Hour 3 have swapped positions, with the former up to second place with another $12m taking its total to $185m so far. The latter, though, brought in another $11m, but is spluttering at $108m. The former is the only sequel this summer that will make more money than its predecessors, the latter most definitely isn’t, lagging some way behind Rush Hour 2.
Three new releases then follow in fourth, fifth and sixth. In order, Mr Bean’s Holiday finally made it to America with plenty of profit already in the bank, and it took $9.9m. Jet Li-Jason Statham starrer WAR, meanwhile, garnered $9.8m, while Scarlett Johansson's lack of box office spark struck again, with The Nanny Diaries managing $7.4m.
Seventh place was picked up by The Simpsons Movie ($4.3m for a $173m total), eight went to fantasy movie Stardust ($3.8m for a $26.3 total), ninth to Hairspray (now up to $107m after a $3.2m weekend) while tenth is arguably the summer’s biggest flop, The Invasion, about to drop out of the top ten with just $11.4m after a $3m second weekend.
Next week, Rob Zombie’s remake of John Carpenter’s Halloween descends on America, seemingly two months early. But, er, who are we to argue? Table tennis comedy Balls Of Fury also opens. The excitement...

"Balls of Fury" has me convinced that Christoper Walken will do anything for money. I'm saving up spare change to get him to come to my New Year's party.
