JJ Abrams’ Star Trek sequel has a release date

Simon Brew

JJ Abrams and his new Star Trek crew will be returning to cinema screens in 2012...

Published on Jan 11, 2010

Here's some welcome news to kick off the week. Given that many of us have now devoured the film numerous times on disc, questions have inevitably been raised about when we can expect to see Star Trek 2/12/whatever you want to call it. And it seems that Paramount Pictures has now answered that question.

The studio has earmarked June 29th 2012 as the day for the next Star Trek movie, making first claim on that summer's big release dates. There was early speculation that a sequel may be turned around in two years rather than three (the former being the pattern that the Iron Man and Transformers films appear to be following), but it soon became clear that that would be a fairly big ask.

As such, we've got to wait another couple of years yet, but at least we know what date to ring in our diaries. Not that, er, 2012 diaries are on sale yet. Small flaw in our plan, that...

The longer between these two "Star Hack" movies, the better. Perhaps they'll come up with an original idea next time, instead of simply doing a reworking of "Nemesis". That was a lousy enough movie already. I know I'm in a minority here regarding "Star Trek 11 - All Action, No Substance". Others with intelligence will come around eventually.

It was a good movie with a decent story, nice acting and several surprises. Overall a lot of fun. Those with intelligence have spoke at the box office and home sales. Trying to insult people who generally enjoyed the movie only to reinforce your opinion is counterproductive and shows a lack immaturity. In the future, simply state your opinion and leave the rest to your Nintendo Wii.

I found 11 ok at best and a bit too 'all things to everyone'. Was most dissapointed with the Spock line. Yet again the reliance on CGI dominated and the need for fully PC'd characters and equally opportunity made it a repetitive product of its times. 12 will be exactly the same, watchable but not memeorable. These movies need a fan commitee to have a vote on plot lines etc, to give the egde back that allows the genre to prosper in the first place.

"The longer between these two "Star Hack" movies, the better. Perhaps they'll come up with an original idea next time, instead of simply doing a reworking of "Nemesis"." Um... because both featured Romulans? I suppose there was a minuscule similarity with Shinzon and Nero in that they've both lost something and they're bent on revenge but... that was a stretch too far.

Cerveloguy, what are you banging on about with your 'equally opportunity' line? Everyone is the same nationality as they are in the 60s? Wtf? And if you think a equally opportunity will do any good you are mistaken. Have you seen the fan films fans make? The plot lines on forums? the fan fiction? These people are nutters. They wouldn't give the edge back, they'd make the entire franchise vanish. AGAIN.

Given that fans are responsible for Kirk/Spock stories, a genre that started the whole slash-fiction thing (look it up on Wikipedia if you don't know what I'm talking about). I think that Interference’s view about what fans could bring to the films are spot on!
