G.I. Joe 2: greenlit and writers hired

G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra might not have won many friends, but it made lots of cash. And the sequel is now pressing ahead…
Published on Jan 8, 2010
You're not alone if you found yourself disappointed by Paramount's G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra last summer. Check out Duncan's review of the DVD if you want evidence of that. But the hard economics are that the film went on to make $300m around the world, and as was reported at the time, Paramount is keen to press ahead with a sequel. And quickly.
And it looks like it's going to be getting one, too. Collider is now reporting that not only is Paramount pressing ahead with the film, but it's also sorted out who's going to be writing it. The chosen pair? Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
If you're thinking that you've heard their names already this week, then you wouldn't be wrong. Reese and Wernick have also been hired by Fox to pen the upcoming X-Men spin-off, Deadpool, after enjoying significant success with Zombieland last year.
There's no firm timescale in place on G.I. Joe 2, nor is it clear whether director Stephen Sommers will be back for the sequel (we'd be really surprised if he was). But Paramount is likely to want its movie quite quickly, and thus we'd expect G.I. Joe 2 to be ahead of Deadpool on Reese and Wernick's to-do list...
