Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz team up for action-comedy Knight And Day. And here’s the first trailer…

Entertainment Tonight has premiered the muddled maiden trailer for next summer’s Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz-starring action comedy Knight And Day. The pair have worked together before, on Vanilla Sky, but here they’re united under the direction of James Mangold (Girl Interrupted, Walk The Line). Mangold is a strong and often underappreciated director - we still love Cop Land - and his involvement instantly lifts the film up in our eyes.

Is it just us, though, that thinks this isn’t a great trailer? There’s some interesting stuff in there, certainly, but it doesn’t really gel particularly well.

It’s just a trailer, to be fair, and it wouldn’t be the first film to come up with an underwhelming promo and then turn things round. See what you think, though, right here…

I don't know. The gags are good. The action seems decent. But the plot will no doubt be wafer thin. And I can't help getting this feeling that Tom and Cameron both thought this movie would be the best and most predictable thing to do to get their comeback, considering the positive reaction to Tom's funny scene in Tropic Thunder. Maybe the studios thought, hey, he can do comedy too! And immediately cast him in this brainless flick. Valkyrie was great, but this is just brainless. Not an original idea in sight.

It's not a good start when the two minute trailer bores the socks off me! Looks really poor.

Everybody calm down. Its an action comedy, never the most promising of genres- but it actually looks ok. Not brilliant, but ok. I think I am mostly pleased that Katherine Frikkin Heigl is not in a date movie for once.
