McG still wants to make two more Terminator films

Simon Brew

Director McG confirms he still wants to finish off the trilogy he started with Terminator Salvation. But will he be allowed?

Published on Dec 7, 2009

The future of the Terminator franchise is set to be determined in February 2010, when the auction to the rights to it is completed. It's believed that all of the major movie studios are involved in the bidding at some point down the line, and that Halcyon is set to sell to the highest bidder.

And that inevitably puts the sequel to Terminator Salvation under some threat. The film overcame relatively disappointing US box office numbers thanks to some stellar performances elsewhere in the world, locking up the best part of $400m in the process. And it was, if you recall, set to be the first of a new trilogy of films.

Whether that trilogy will continue will, no doubt, be up to whoever stumps up the cash for the rights this time round. But what is clear is that director McG is still keen to finish his work on the franchise.

During the live commentary for Terminator Salvation that he recently did (which was accessible to those who had bought the film on Blu-ray), the man himself revealed that he still has plans for make the fifth and sixth films in the series.

We might be going out on a limb here, but we don't expect that to happen at all. Instead, we'd be surprised if the new rights holders decided to continue the Salvation narrative, and instead are likely to press ahead with a new direction. And we'd also wager that they've had no great desire to see McG return to the director's chair.

All of this is up in the air until February at the least, of course. But we can't imagine that you stump up $50-60m for the Terminator franchise (that's the least we'd imagine it's going to cost) and simply pick up the exact strands that were left behind before. That said, we've been wrong before...

Please for the love of everything DON'T let McMuppet anywhere near any new Terminator movies (hell keep him away from the entire business)! If anyone wants to make any new Terminator movies I would love to see them follow the T:SCC time line, and let Summer Glau reprise her role as a Terminator *DROOL*.

I like the way Cordas is thinking, I held off watching SCC season 2 till I had the Blu-Ray and have been loving it. The ability to take a wider look at the universe has been great and a bigger budget would definetly let them push it further.

For the love of of god, whoever takes over, please give us the future we imagined. Bleak, dark dystopian battlegrounds, HK's hunting, the resistance scrabbling around ruined buildings. In other words, the future sequnece at the opening of Terminator.

haha Cordas, exactly what I thought. I am beginning to suspect that McWhatsisname and Michael Bay are the same person. Salvation should be relegated to discontinuity, a film that everyone pretends never happened. Like Highlander 2*. (*There is no Highlander 2)

Well what can one say at this point, they made a PG 13 Terminator movie with Terminators barley killing any one in the entire movie, in fact that movie was about Terminators keeping people alive. So, if they were so that much stupid to green light those "ideas" im not surprised at all that they are actually considering to keep on that tone. I mean, why would someone expect smart from stupid?

For the love of gods, would people PLEASE stop mentioning Highlander 2? I've been trying my best, for many, many years to forget that piece of $#!+ (it's the Worst Movie Ever, as far as I'm concerned). And, as for McG? Salvation was, basically, a critical disaster that may well have financially ruined its studio. And he wants to make another one? (How's that definition of insanity go?) How is it that he and others like him (such as Brett Ratner) actually get paid good money by the studios to ruin successful franchises? (Again, how's that definition of insanity go?)
