Avatar’s latest clip: but are we heading for Avatar fatigue?

Simon Brew

More Avatar footage to check out right here: but has the promotion of the film gone from one extreme to the other?

Published on Nov 24, 2009

Is anyone keeping count of these? Because in terms of footage and clips from Avatar, we must be easily past the ten minute mark now, and we wouldn't be surprised if we're pushing 20 (possibly more, and that's not including the sequences shown in the cinema presentation over the summer).

It seems a long time ago now that Avatar was a project shrouded in some of the most intense secrecy we've seen in recent times, to the point where the much-hyped unveiling of the original trailer was such an event. Now? If you're anything like us, you kind of expect to find a new clip or featurette on Avatar arriving on a daily basis. Granted, it's sites likes ours that are contributors to the problem, greedily eating up anything Avatar-related that we can find. But even so: there does seem to be a lot of footage being cranked out of the publicity machine.

The latest clip arrived on IGN, and to be fair, it looks like a fun chase between two computer generated characters in the middle of a jungle. It's also refreshing to see a full, cut together scene flowing as it should, rather than bits and pieces.

It's odd though, and I say this as someone looking forward to seeing Avatar a lot: there are moments with this film where it looks like a really, really impressive kids Saturday morning cartoon, and this sequence is one of them. Considering that one part of the clip involves one of said characters swimming underwater, it's hard to understate the technical challenge of what's been put on the screen. But given the disparate parts of the jigsaw that we've been presented through the various promotional clips and trailers, we remain intrigued as to how well all of this will fit together. We did like this latest clip, though.

Meanwhile, while Fox clearly have a great deal more expertise in promoting major blockbuster movies than we do, is it just us that thinks things have lurched from one extreme to the other where the world of Avatar is concerned?

We've not got long to wait for the finished film, though. The film finally arrives on 17th December. For now, though, here's the latest clip...

There is a lot of footage coming out, but isn't that what was being demanded before? Damned if you do, damned if you don't. There is another film out this winter however that I feel we have definately heard far too much about.

I'm not really following this. I still can't forgive it for stealing the Avatar title from the Last Airbender movie. The only thing I've seen is the cinema trailer which was just odd and not very good at selling the movie, except for the battle scene toward the end. I very much doubt I'll see it in the cinema. James Cameron makes movies based around technology these days not necessarily story so this feels very much like a show reel for his geek hobby.

James Cameron is such a bastard. How dare he use a word that perfectly describes the creatures grown to be controlled in the film. Also, Microsoft are bastards for using the word for their version of 'Miis' on the xbox, again a pefect word to describe what it is. The cheek of them, how dare they use a word in it's proper context when a childrens cartoon already uses it. Also, that James Cameron twat, all he does these days is make effects driven films. These days he makes loads of them, iv counted 6943745942 since Titanic came out. He's such a cock, how dare he either use technology to it's fullest potential or use a noun in it's correct context.

Want to see Avatar before it's released? Just rent "Battle for Terra". Pretty much the same storyline, just not as great special effects. Big bad human military killing peaceful indigenous inhabitants for greed. Yeah, like the special effects are going to make me want to see this movie. Skip.

Ok, was really rather indifferent about this but that actually looked quite good...

i love it how people can say that its the exact same film as Battle for Terra when they obviously havent seen Avatar yet. Its a 150 minute film - how do you know the exact plot? Have you ever thought about playing the lottery? Because some weeks there are 6 numbers, then other weeks there are 6 numbers, so you will definately win - cos its all the same, innit blud?

I think this movie looks like a glorified Fern Gully

Even as someone who thinks that clip is FANTASTIC, I would have to admit theplot resembalance to Battle for Terra is a very suspicious coincidence... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_for_Terra

UG. This looks like every scene from every "CGI Creature" movie from the last 16 post-Jurassic Park years. I think we've got our new Phantom Menace folks. (but I'll still see it)

Agree that it's like other scenes from other movies. Unoriginal. Add in that the plot is from BfT, that they have tails because someone thinks they're neat things, etc and you have the makings of a disaster of a movie in my view. The more previews I see, the more I dislike the movie.

gudge: Awesome post! All you haters sound like a bunch of rest-home old farts. The Na'vi could reach out of the screen and jerk you off and you would still complain it looks cheesy. Oh, and Cameron had the name Avatar before the CHILDS cartoon. Hope you enjoy that Shyamalan turd when it hits theatres next year.

All Of The Above

OK first Cameron has no 'recent movies' to compare this to - but his movies have always been entertaining (at least) and financially successful (duh). It won't really matter if he gives away 20 or even 40 minutes of imagery in trailers and clips if he's reserving 90 or 100 minutes of the best stuff, and it won't really matter if he gives away the basic plot (hello, everyone knew Titanic was a love story on a shop that sinks) as long as how he tells the story is compelling. The point is this daily-leak marketing cpaign has us all talking about it. No one can say anything definitive until they see the whole thing in IMAX 3D, and that won't happen til December 10.

If you aren't looking forward to this film, why are you even visiting Den of Geek? Please go watch a Merchant Ivory film and discuss with fellow bores about the magnitude of "uncomfortable silence".

I'm not watching this stuff. why? because when i go to the movie i want it all to be a surprise. talk about spoiling it for yourself...

I don't care a jot about this film, but I visit Denofgeek because they happen to have other things here than just Avatar trailers. An obvious answer?

they also have lots of things about Twilight too, which keeps Damon entertained ;-)

Funny, I talk about why I don't like the movie and other people just provide personal insults. Tell ya what, let me scrape bottom and join in for a second. Got enough intelligence to actually talk about the *movie* instead of personal insults? Go ahead, ignore insults and talk about the previews and the movie. Be intelligent for once, I dare you. :)

Errrrrr..... where exactly are either these personal insults you talk about, or your own opinions for that matter? "Want to see Avatar before it's released? Just rent "Battle for Terra"." - stolen opinion. "Agree that it's like other scenes from other movies. Unoriginal." ironic since you stole that opinion, incidentally it doesnt look like every other movie, does it? The only other 'opinion' you have is that you dont like the fact they Na'vi have tails. This is MY opinion, which you seem to think I dont have for some reason. Youre "opinions" are based on trying to be a little moaning bitch thats too cool for school. Based on the directors track record, the very impressive CGI in the trailers, the fact that the trailer in 3D is the best I have ever seen, the obvious scope of the film, the story arc of Jake looks compelling (dont say "its been done" about military man protecting the indiginous species, because thats pretty ignorant. If you want to talk about narrative theory and spheres of actions then we can), and also the fact its at IMAX (again, I have seen other films at IMAX, but it doesnt mean i dont completely appreciate it) - im really psyched for this movie. Up until now, noone has personally insulted you. You have just made yourself look rather silly by asking for intelligent opinion as a retort to "but they have tails".

Jeez O Pete

Hello, boys, I'm new here. Is it always like this? I post my precious (but serious, fact-based) point of view, and no one responds? You just start flaming each other over (perfectly common but perfectly ignorable) personal "posting" issues? I had such high expectations of the mother country! (Guess it's the *mother* country.)

ha!ha! I think gudge is a refugee from AICN talkbacks looking for a new venue to spout off! No, the comments aren't usually as vitriolic as gudge makes them. They can be opinionated and conflicting, but generally respectful and reasonable with it. As for Jimmy-boy having the name in development ages, I'm not quite sure that's true. The title was announced about 2-3 years ago and I remember a fuss about people confusing it with the excellent Avatar show on TV. And you're probably right, with Shyamalan directing it will not be the film it could have been, but as a fan of the show I live in hope!

OK, so I watched Ferngully because the internet claims Avatar ripped it off. I just failed to see how. Is it because it's filmed in a forest setting? Because a human boy interacts with the fairy? Both of those things are pretty weak arguments that Avatar is a ripoff.

Sorry Tokyo, I did agree with your point - I thought u were agreeing with me after you repeated my point! I would call my posts vitriolic - I'd call them sarcastic and fact based. Why is it perfectly fine for people to just call me wrong on this site, yet when I retaliate IM the bastard? Sorry for trying to make people laugh and be entertained with my comments rather than a simple "no - it's got tails" bitch comment. I only Insult ridiculous opinion and overt spoilers. Grow up and get a sense of humour. "the big bad man on the Internet didn't agree with my non-opinions and argued his points well, but he called me a moaning bitch. I know he gave a person insult to be ironic, but he's so nasty and horrible. I'm quite sure he must rape pensioners too". Get your facts straight n I won't make you so inconsolably upset. PS the AICN are too much even for me!

I think some out there dismiss a film based upon the size of its large budget. The size of its "hype-machine". The marketing. The tie-ins. And to those that would do that, that's lame. Cameron is coming out with a GIANT film in all respects. It is starting to pop-up everywhere. And people are already hating it. Why? No good reasons at all. Please, go watch your Twilight/Transformers CRAPFESTS and feel good about the fact that you are on the bandwagon of films that are utter shite!

Gudge. Sorry if I overstepped the mark! The odd well placed sniper shot works well but it felt like a roland emmerich level of sarcasm which was a bit too much for me. My sense of humour must have been hiding in a bunker with john connor.

And furthermore

Yeah, and I had too much refreshing beverage before my last post. Frankly, I am experiencing Avatar overload, but mostly because I'm hyped for this thing and can't seem to stop looking for stuff to hold me aver til the 18th. But for most non-geek purposes I think the marketing's probably brilliant. And I'm sure there will still be plenty of surprises even for the terminally spoiled, unless the HMFIC has had a brain transplant in the last 12 years.
