Avatar news round-up

Simon Brew

The running time is set, the film isn’t finished, new footage, new posters and more in our latest round-up of James Cameron’s Avatar news…

Published on Nov 23, 2009

With under a month to go now before we get to see whether James Cameron has delivered on the ambition and potential of his long-cherished Avatar project, there's inevitably a fair amount of news attention for the film. Here's the round-up of the latest goings-on...

* We were suspecting that the running time of the film might push the three hour mark, but The Hollywood Reporter has now said that, due to the limitations of IMAX technology, there are maximums in place for how long the film can run for. Thus, the final running time of Avatar, with credits, is therefore set to be 156 minutes.

* Producer Jon Landau, meanwhile, has been speaking to the Wall Street Journal, and has revealed just how much work is left to be done on the movie. Landau reports that with less than a month on the clock, there's still half an hour of the film that needs to be finished. That said, it's very much last minute bits and pieces that are, apparently, being tuned in time for December 17th. Just quite a lot of last minute bits and pieces.

* The videogame, which is being published by UbiSoft, will be on sale from 4th December. The soundtrack CD is going on sale on 15th December.

* The film is booked into US cinemas for eight weeks at least, with a far longer run (with no competition on the horizon) for IMAX screens. It'll be playing in IMAX cinemas until at least March. Meanwhile, the US roll-out is expected to see it on 3500 3D screens, which we're guessing isn't as big a number as James Cameron would wish for.

* The two new posters you see in the vicinity of these words are the latest international ones promoting the film that Fox has released.

* Finally, Fox has released another new featurette that shows off yet more footage from the film. This one features actor Steven Lang talking about his character - Colonel Quaritch - and how he sees the Avatar world. You can find it right below...

Avatar is released on 17th December.

James Cameron has to be a happy guy. For the longest time, his film Titanic held the box office records for highest grosses worldwide – which has just been knocked down to number two, by Cameron's new film, Avatar . There are only two records it has to beat, and one is possible – highest US grosses, and highest ticket sales. The champion of US grosses is still Titanic, but record ticket sales still belong to Gone with the Wind, with over 200 million. Avatar is still under 90. Obviously, Cameron will never need payday loans again – heck, he never needs to work again, and his kids probably won't need to either.
