Twilight New Moon smashes opening day box office record

Simon Brew

We knew it was going to be big - but Twilight New Moon has notched up staggering opening day numbers...

Published on Nov 21, 2009

Given the hype, the build-up, the Robert Pattinson fever and the general feeling that the world of Twilight was one that was attracting a fair bit of interest, we still didn't expect a number like this.

For the opening day take of Twilight: New Moon has shattered single day opening records, leaving films such as The Dark Knight in its wake.

Are you sat down? Twilight New Moon's opening day take in the US alone is $72.7m. That's over $5m more than the previous record holder, The Dark Knight, which was also playing on more screens. Furthermore, the opening day record has traditionally gone to a summer blockbuster, rather than a November release.

New Moon has also doubled the original Twilight's take in the same space of time, and for sake of comparison, its opening day take was $10m more than that for Transformers 2, $13m more than Spider-Man 3 and $22m more than Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. Harry Potter has also had his ass spanked.

Where this leaves the full weekend gross in the US is unclear, but don't rule off something around the $170m mark. Ron will have the full box office report, as well as his take on Twilight: New Moon, on Monday.

After I heard about the pre-ticket sales, not too surprised. Horrified, but not too surprised. I'm not the target audience though am I? Legs should be great too, just look at how Titanic rode out the similar audience...

Was talking to a friend of mine in a seminar on Friday. She hasn't seen a single Star Wars, James Bond, Matrix or Lord Of The Rings film BUT by the end of Friday had seen New Moon three times. I have no connection to humanity anymore :P

From what I've read, the general consensus is that the movie not only blows but is worse than the first. I don't think this movie will have the longevity that the studio's are hoping for. That being said, no one on earth can understand teenage girls so who knows, this drivel could break records.

We have heard all the cons of piracy, but here it could be a positive. Download a copy for every fickle and uneducated teenage angst-ridden puppy-love-lorn girl in the world. From my understanding of the women at work who were all excited (and it was only women), they would live a prerelease copy for free - it's the exact same people who buy cam versions of substandard horror films from a bloke in the pub (too stupid to do it themselves) and make fun of me for going to the cinema every week. If they all had an early HD copy of Twilight then they wouldn't pay to see it, hence the end of this crap called Twilight.

I honestly cannot believe people are bothered by this film being popular. Why the fuck should it bother you? Is anyone forcing you to watch it if you don't like it? And accusations of "drivel"? Why, because it's a love story mainly aimed at girls? Could we look at some of the pedigree here...Chris Weitz, responsible for a pretty good teen comedy, the excellent About A Boy and an ambitious if compromised Golden Compass. Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg also writes on the incredible Dexter and Kristen Stewart has been delivering good performances for around a decade now. The next film is being directed by David "Hard frigging Candy" Slade for goodness sake. You might not like these films, but that doesn't have to mean that they're drivel. At the end of the day this story is about film is making money and making the people who see it happy and if that bothers you *this* much you probably have some deeper issues to sort out in your life.

As an addendum, I was watching Deadwood last night, and there was a perfect line from Cy Tolliver to describe my feelings to people bitching about how this franchise's success somehow offends them: "You can help your delicate sensibilities by turning the fuck away!"

Because it's all I seem to hear about via either news websites, social networking or from idiots at work. It much the same vein, why the fuck do you care if I'm annoyed or not?

YES! I totally agree. You cannot turn away from this. Turning away is about effective as politely asking not to be waterboarded. Although I don't like these kind of movies, I'm not mad at the teenage girls or the other ppl who like it that wish they were teenage girls.

Probably $135-$140 for the weekend. Even though most people agree the first movie sucked, you STILL get sucked into far too many Twilight conversations just living your life. It's terrible!

I'm annoyed at your annoyance, gudge, because you blanket every single person who likes this as "fickle and uneducated". For the record, my sister for one, is whip fucking smart and she doesn't generally look down on people either, like you seem to ("idiots at work")

I do look down on Twilight and people that watch it - and it is my right to do so. You make out like mediocrity is something to applaud, when it isnt. This is an age when Twilight is the highest selling film in the world and the majority of the public spends their time watching soaps and reality television - it's all lowest common denominator garbage aimed at tapping into a trend to make money. You seem to think that telling me your sister watches Twilight is going to make me "see the error of my ways" or whatever self-righteous crap you might want to speil. It doesnt at all. Now, when i say "uneducated", I am not referring to the difference between a biochemist and a brain surgeon. I'm reffering to the people that watch crap because they would rather be spoon fed substandard entertainment rather than try and think for themselves. Finally, I am annoyed at your annoyance at my annoyance, and my dad is harder than your dad. Try arguing with valid points to express your opinion, rather than just trying to belittle me. What the hell does your sister not belittling people have to do with the merrits of the Twilight films?

Also, listing a auteurs previous accomplishments means very little to me, as anyone can use imdb.com. You forgot to mention that Michael Sheen is in it and that he is brilliant in anything. Using the argument that Rossenburg is part of a team of writers on Dexter means nothing as she doesnt write a single episode alone - it is collectively written and different episode in the series are assigned to different members of the writing team. So Chris Weitz directed About A Boy a few years ago - I'm so very very impressed. You seem to think that I must hate any film that invovles romance - but you would be completely arrogant to assume so. I'm not going to list every film I have ever seen with a love scene just to prove a point. I am also not going to point out that my sister is intelligent and likes 'Fame', because that would mean that Fame is the best film ever.
