Uh-oh: Leona Lewis to sing title track from James Cameron's Avatar

If you read that headline and started getting Celine Dion flashbacks, we share your fears...

James Cameron isn’t going out of his way to make things easier for himself. As he puts the finishing touches to what’s easily become one of the most fascinating movie projects of the year (in many senses), news has emerged of the soundtrack album to the film Avatar.

This, ordinarily, would not cause us to flutter much of an eyebrow. The fact that James Horner is doing the music to Avatar has been known for a while. We’re immense fans of his, and look forward to hearing what he came up with.

But – uh-oh – what’s this? Front and centre of the press release announcing the release of the Avatar soundtrack album is this:

“The album, which features music composed and conducted by Academy Award®-winner James Horner (Titanic), will be highlighted by the film’s end title song, “I See You (Theme from Avatar),” performed by multiple Grammy® Award-nominated singer Leona Lewis, and produced by James Horner and Simon Franglen, the team behind Titanic’s blockbuster theme song, “My Heart Will Go On.”  A companion video directed by Jake Nava (Beyoncé, Shakira) is currently in production”

The team behind My Heart Will Gone On? Leona Lewis? My shit.

I’ve nothing against Leona Lewis, but surely it can’t just be our Celine Dion alarm bells that are clanging with some ferocity? Granted, this is likely to be the tune that’s warbled over the end credits, and granted, it might be great. But we don’t remember Aliens or Terminator 2 having a song attached to them, and they’re the style of films that we hope that Cameron is coming closer to with Avatar.

We're still looking forward to the film immensely, but they do make it tough on themselves.

The soundtrack album is available from Atlantic Records on 14th December, and the Avatar movie will be having its world premiere in London on Thursday 10th December at two cinemas. Expect the song to be in the running for an Oscar too. That's usually the way these things work.

Incidentally, we do wonder if there's a secret geek hiding in Leona Lewis, given that she's signed up to do Final Fantasy XIII's title track too...?

Who was it on here who coined the term "AVATAR...SMASH?"

Is it just me or is anyone else not particularly bothered about this film?

AMAZING! I think the industry needs more of this. Celine taking on the title track for The Expendables, Donny Osmond tackling Die Hard 5 and Des O'Connor for the next Pixar flick. What a pile of dung.

It's called marketing. Leonard Lewis is huge and will no doubt bring yet more attention to the film (please don't mistake me as a fan!) I'm not paticularly bothered about what is going to be playing as I'm walking out - it's finished by then and it's either been great or it hasn't. If I walk out thinking "god, I'm so annoyed at this song" then the film probably won't have been great anyway. Personally (as some of you know) I'm incredibly excited - there's few films I write off without seeing them (alvin films, future Saws anything Twilight based). I just think this film deserves anticipation, both due to the directors extremely impressive track record and for the material seen so far. Add the nerd in me and I'm excited for the new 3D technology on an IMAX screen. So it might not be an action horror film and possibly have a romance angle (god forbid) - deal with it.

...And that's how she'll be known forever more... Leonard Lewis... Brilliant. I nearly spat out my coffee when that press release came through.

oh and the evil marketeers continue you to draw in the minions, personally i think she has a beautiful voice, and i'm not too sure if Avatar will be in the same thread as terminator or aliens , from what i have seen it looks more action romance than scifi horror, either way i might not be a fan of leonard lewis but i am looking forward to the film.

im not saying she doesnt have a good voice, im just saying its not 'my thing' - regardless - i wasnt actually complaining (hell, im completely bumming this film so far). im just saying that it probably was a marketing choice to get someone 'so hot right now' to sing the end song. Granted Celine Dion is bloody annoying, but you cant say Jimmy didnt give her her most famous song by tacking her onto the end of Titanic.

Terminator 2 came out with "You Could Be Mine" by Guns N' Roses attached.

this xbox game release gets bigger and bigger. It'd be great if they could get susan boyle to duet with leonard. They could then have susan boyle stuff for sale in the avatar marketplace on live. the tie ins just keep coming. Probably going to be the biggest game release since erm MW2.

You Could be Mine is a fine song, not like the phlegm drizzled slug-on-a-poo stuff that Leonard Lewis and Cecil Dion churn out. Anyone remember that Annie Lennox one at the end of the last LotR film, too? How bad was that? How that got chosen to cap off an epic trilogy boggles the mind. I actually killed myself when I heard it; I had to post this comment to DoG with instructions not to open it until today.
