Uh-oh: Leona Lewis to sing title track from James Cameron's Avatar

If you read that headline and started getting Celine Dion flashbacks, we share your fears...

James Cameron isn’t going out of his way to make things easier for himself. As he puts the finishing touches to what’s easily become one of the most fascinating movie projects of the year (in many senses), news has emerged of the soundtrack album to the film Avatar.
This, ordinarily, would not cause us to flutter much of an eyebrow. The fact that James Horner is doing the music to Avatar has been known for a while. We’re immense fans of his, and look forward to hearing what he came up with.
But – uh-oh – what’s this? Front and centre of the press release announcing the release of the Avatar soundtrack album is this:
“The album, which features music composed and conducted by Academy Award®-winner James Horner (Titanic), will be highlighted by the film’s end title song, “I See You (Theme from Avatar),” performed by multiple Grammy® Award-nominated singer Leona Lewis, and produced by James Horner and Simon Franglen, the team behind Titanic’s blockbuster theme song, “My Heart Will Go On.” A companion video directed by Jake Nava (Beyoncé, Shakira) is currently in production”
The team behind My Heart Will Gone On? Leona Lewis? My shit.
I’ve nothing against Leona Lewis, but surely it can’t just be our Celine Dion alarm bells that are clanging with some ferocity? Granted, this is likely to be the tune that’s warbled over the end credits, and granted, it might be great. But we don’t remember Aliens or Terminator 2 having a song attached to them, and they’re the style of films that we hope that Cameron is coming closer to with Avatar.
We're still looking forward to the film immensely, but they do make it tough on themselves.
The soundtrack album is available from Atlantic Records on 14th December, and the Avatar movie will be having its world premiere in London on Thursday 10th December at two cinemas. Expect the song to be in the running for an Oscar too. That's usually the way these things work.
Incidentally, we do wonder if there's a secret geek hiding in Leona Lewis, given that she's signed up to do Final Fantasy XIII's title track too...?
