Paranormal Activity 2 on the way
Simon Brew
An ultra-low budget film that suddenly makes lots of money? The inevitable Paranormal Activity sequel is on the way, it seems…
Published on Nov 4, 2009
From the point where the low-budget chiller Paranormal Activity started to garner serious box office traction, there was a deep-rooted suspicion that Paramount - who unexpectedly has found itself with the must-see film of the film - would look to generate a sequel to it.
And before you can say Book Of Shadows, that's exactly what's currently being planned. The news was all but confirmed by Viacom chief Phillippe Dauman, in a call regarding the organisation's earnings. Viacom owns Paramount, and Dauman, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is already looking at the marketing of Paranormal Activity 2. "Our team will come up with the right creative and marketing approach to make sure that we benefit from a sequel," he is quoted as saying.
Might we also suggest small things like keeping the original film makers on board if you're going to do it, and if you must do a sequel to such a one-off film, don't come up with a storyline that urinates all over the original. That was perhaps the most insulting thing about the Blair Witch sequel, in that it made the first film borderline redundant if you took Book Of Shadows in any way seriously.
Fortunately, we didn't. But we still fear for Paranormal Activity 2.
Here's the piece at The Hollywood Reporter and here's our review of Paranormal Activity.
