Joss Whedon’s brilliant pitch for the Terminator franchise

Simon Brew

The genius that is Joss Whedon has a point to make about the future of the Terminator franchise. We think they should sell it to him…

Published on Nov 3, 2009

Yesterday, we reported that the rights to the Terminator movies were going up for grabs at auction with every major Hollywood studio reported to have lodged an interest in snapping them up. Given the state of the Terminator franchise contrasted against its heyday, you might be wondering quite what all the fuss is about. And in Joss Whedon, you may have just found someone to align with.

Whedon has written a spectacularly good open letter to the owners of the Terminator franchise, making his (spoof) pitch to buy the rights. It's gone up over at Deadline Hollywood, and in his letter, Whedon - who introduces himself as "the mastermind behind Titan A.E., Parenthood (not the movie) (or the new series) (or the one where 'hood' was capitalized 'cause it was a pun), and myriad other legendary tales" - puts his offer right on the table. "I am prepared to make a pre-emptive bid RIGHT NOW to wrap this dealio up," he writes. "This is not a joke, this is not a scam, this is not available on TV. I will write a check TODAY for $10,000, and viola! Terminator off your hands."

But what would he do with it, you might ask? Noting the Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke has argued that the Terminator franchise is pretty much done, Whedon responds by offering some suggestions as to what he'd do with the franchise if he got his hands on it:

"1) Terminator... of the Rings! ... he's a cyborg and he doesn't give a s#&% about the ring -- it has no power over him! And he can carry it AND Frodo AND Sam AND f@%& up some orcs while he's doing it. This stuff just comes to me. I mean it."

Or what about:

"3) Can you say... musical? Well don't. Even I know that's an awful idea."

For fans of the Batman movies:

"4) Christian Bale's John Connor will get a throat lozenge. This will also help his Batwork (ten grand for that franchise too, btw.)"

And then there's...

"5) More porn. John Connor never told Kyle Reese this, but his main objective in going to the past was to get some. What if there's a lot of future-babies that have to be made? Cue wah-wah pedal guitar -- and dollar signs!"

As Whedon notes in his concluding paragraph, "I really believe the Terminator franchise has only begun to plumb the depths of questioning the human condition during awesome stunts, and I'd like to shepherd it through the next phase. The money is there, but more importantly, the heart is there. But more importantly, money."

You can read the full letter here, and we right here, right now, top Mr Whedon's offer by bidding $10,001 for the series now. Will Joss be getting into a bidding war with us, we wonder?

I pray to god that someone keeps it out of his hands.

There is not one funny thing about his proposal. Tell this clown to work on his jokes at the Comedy Club first before he tries this crap again. *yawn*

Jeez, way to have a sense of humour guys. A) It is quite obviously a joke. B)It is a take on the Lorne Michaels “Beatles” pitch. C) Just because *you* don't like it doesn't make it crap. Oh and DoG - Nikki (the thief) Finke actually just lifted this from Whedonesque (yes I am a Whedonite, let the flaming begin) where it was originally posted, without so much as a credit.

Yes we realise it's a joke, akin in quality to that joke he wrote for the Alien Resurrection script. My own personal opinion is that his work really REALLY sucks, but it's popular so what can you do. If I had ten grand, I'd offer it to Joss in exchange for him never being involved in film or television ever again.

Bah, go swing, Whedon-haters. The guy gave us Firefly, and as a result I can forgive him anything, because by god it was one of the greatest shows ever made. Also, I think this is hilarious. Grow a humour gland, guys.

Wow. Chillax, dudes. Terminator fans hate Joss Whedon. We get it. We hear it every time mention is made of Joss or his work. We all don't have to like exactly the same things, and Whedon's stuff is much more grounded in fantasy and humor than the Terminator franchise, so it makes sense that fans of one might not be fans of the other. But the vitriol is unwarranted, and I'm tired of it.

Joss Whedon is not a genius, Firefly has been hyped now for years it was another mediocre Sci-Fi show. That is why it was cancel.

I like this comment section, I thought I was alone after seeing nothing but praise for Joss Whedon's overhyped efforts. But is reassuring to know there's people out there that see it for the tripe it is.

I hope Dollhouse gets canceled. Perhaps then Whedon will give up and just go away. He is THE most overrated writer in the business.

Bull crap! Over rated? He is a Emmy Award Winning GOD!!!!! Every tv show he has created has turned into a cult, from Buffy to Angel to Firefly and to Dollhouse!! He fights for female rights, gay rights etc. That's the reason he has such a loyal fan base.
