Anthony Hopkins confirmed as Odin in Thor

Thor has found his father, as Anthony Hopkins steps up to play Odin in Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming movie…

Published on Oct 30, 2009

The upcoming Thor movie has finally found its Odin, with it now being confirmed that Anthony Hopkins is taking on the role. Now don't get us wrong: we like Anthony Hopkins. But we wanted Brian Blessed to play Odin, and he shall forever own the role in our dream version of the cast. But, alas, this is a case of not to be.

Hopkins' involvement in the project was revealed at The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog, where it's said that he's "in negotiations" to play the role. However, we've never known a high profile part such as this one to go to another actor once the words "in negotiations" crop up.

The film is set to start shooting in the next couple of months, under the stewardship of director Kenneth Branagh. Much of the rest of the cast has been in place for some time already, with Chris Hemsworth long confirmed in the title role, along with Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

Here's the link to the Heat Vision Blog story.

Never fear, it could still go wrong 'uns. Hopkins will do ANY old movie if the price is right, and maybe Marvel won't be able to front the cash, if they need him for more than one film and don't want to pay out as much up front, but over time (as was the case with Samuel L. Jackson). As for an example of "negotiations" going worng, what about Nic Cage and The Green Hornet, only a month or two ago? So it might all go wrong and Blessed might get it. Keep your chin up, DoG!

Blessed would be perfect as the big guy in the Warriors Three. I don't see Hopkins as Odin, but he'll probably do all right.

Volstag? Yeah hopefully he can still get in. Problem with Hopkins is that i can't recall one film he's been in recently where he hasn't phoned it in.

Volstag, yeah. I think Hopkins has the tendency to overact way too much at times (my problem with his Hannibal Lector performances), but when he reigns it in (The Elephant Man, for instance) he can be magic. I still really don't see him as Odin, but weirder things have happened.

Hopkins would be ideal as Odin! This is inspired casting, and I do hope he hams it up. Anthony Hopkins as the one-eyed raven loving king of the Gods would be something wonderful to behold. I just hope he doesn't price himself out of the movie, but I get the feeling him and Brannagh would click like the pair of old luvvies they are.

Odin is renowned for his wisdom. Anthony Hopkins fits the role better than Brian Blessed. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting Mr Blessed is thick, and I like him a lot. I tend to associate him as creating booming brash characters though, while I think Odin should be more reflective. That being said I'm aware those are rather typecast views, and Blessed might well pull it off with the right direction, but I think Hopkins is a good choice.

Actually Blessed would be good as the Thor of the actual mythology! He was very brash, jovial and quick tempered, etc. That's not really the Marvel take on Thor though...
