The Kevin Smith Ready Reckoner

Simon Brew

What's Kevin Smith's best film? Debate rages, but since Simon's the one writing this ready reckoner, his word is law. Until you get to the comments box, of course

Published on Aug 3, 2007

“I hope you’re going to let him have it with both barrels”, remarked one Den Of Geeker when it became apparent that Kevin Smith was the next subject of our patent-not-pending Ready Reckoner.

Absolutely not. Because Smith is surely the geek’s choice of director. Even if he can’t actually direct very well and falls back on his writing a lot instead. We’ll break this one down into two parts: the films he’s directed, and the films he’s been in. Best get cracking, then…

DIRECTED

Clerks 3 out of 5
Ironically, what many consider to be his best is one I never really got into. Ho hum.

Mallrats
4 out of 5
In many ways his worst film. But it’s so damn funny I don’t really care. Bring on Mallrats 2, I say…

Chasing Amy 4 out of 5
Brilliant, and his best outing in the director’s chair to date. Even Ben Affleck can’t put you off it.

Dogma 2 out of 5
Half good fun, half turgid mess. The story of Smith promoting it is better than the film itself.

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
3 out of 5
Again, not great, but packed with fun moments. Made me want to see Good Will Hunting 2

Jersey Girl
2 out of 5
A bit of a soppy mess, really. Not terrible, just not, well, anything…

Clerks II
4 out of 5
A riot. I know in my heart of hearts it’s weaker than its predecessor, but I just liked it more. Shame on me, right?

ACTED IN (SELECTED)

Scream 3
3 out of 5
Crap cameo in a so-so end to the trilogy

Daredevil
3 out of 5
Don’t remember him in it, though

Catch and Release 1 out of 5
Crap romantic comedy with death in it

Die Hard 4.0
4 out of 5
A really strong blockbuster with, er, Smith by far the weakest link

ALSO

An Evening With Kevin Smith
3 out of 5
An Evening With Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder 3 out of 5

You have to wade through a lot of shit, but there’s gold on both of these lengthy DVDs…

Anyway, I’m off on holiday now. Argue away in the comments box, and when I get back, I’m putting Matt Damon into the Ready Reckoner chair…

Applesauce, bitch. Not bad. I agree with you on most of these, though I could quibble with your star ratings for Clerks, Dogma, and of course Chasing Amy, which was 5 stars and Smith's most mature work.

In daredevil he was the coroner that hands the cane off to the reporter. Bad Movie. Very bad movie. On the other hand one of my favs is Dogma, definitly a four. And apart from that, Clerks is brilliant, probably a five. I agree with you on most other stuff, even although this run of films is definitely my favorite.

5 stars for both Clerks from me. Same for Mallrats and Chasing Amy. 4 for Jay and Silent Bob. 3 for Dogma. Never got around to Jersey Girl. As for Evening Harder, I was lucky enough to be in the audience for it and appear onscreen throughout, so that's a guaranteed 5 too:-)

clerks is brilliant, 5, mallrats is also brilliant, 5, dogma should get 4. the rest are about right! the characters in these films are some of the best written characters i've ever seen.

Dogma is easily one of the worse films I've ever seen, with Mallrats coming a close second (sorry but they really are crap). Clerks is great though and is aging very well (unlike Chasing Amy).

Personally, I think Dogma is awesome; definitely my favourite Kevin Smith movie.

Good call on the Evenings. The London section of Evening Harder could have been dropped, but the Canadian half makes up for it. Shame the two DVDs were both so long... Still not sure why Chasing Amy is so highly regarded to be honest. Love Dogma to bits though.

why does "Dogma" get two stars? This has got to be the seventh time where these lists go against my opinion.

I agree with spider girl on "Dogma".
