Geek shows and movies on UK TV in the coming week

The comedy shows continue their ain't-life-funny cycle with one winding down while two others spin up, ready to take its place for their share of the chuckles and side-splitting asides.

Peep Show squeaks out its last episode of its sixth season with a finale wherein Jeremy plans to thwart the nuptials of his once shared, sort of girlfriend Elena to her partner, Gail. And Mark may need to beef up his daddy cred and make a stand against child naming catastrophes fast, as Sophie goes into labour. All this happens at 10:00pm tonight on Channel 4.

The Thick Of It returns for a second season of eight episodes on BBC2 starting at 10:10pm on Saturday the 24th. If you've never seen the show, you may want to also catch the double episode special entitled Spinners And Losers on BBC4 tonight at 25 past midnight. That's from the prior season and may ease you in to the sharp wit (and tongues) of the political comedy and its pawns and major players.

The BBC will also play home away from home to American Dad, the animated cousin of Family Guy. The third season opener, The Vacation Goo airs at 10:25pm on Sunday, the 25th on BB3. (The first season of American Dad is currently running on FX if you need an introduction to the Smith family.)

We'll be extra nice this week and remind all telly addicts that clocks get set one hour back this weekend (Sunday 25 October 02:00 BST (01:00 GMT ), officially, apparently), which may be crucial knowledge for your TV viewing pleasure. We wouldn't want you to miss one precious second of Wife Swap USA in the wee hours.
