Harold Ramis on Ghostbusters 3

Simon Brew

A few more titbits regarding the return of the Ghostbusters, from the mouth of Harold Ramis.

Published on Oct 1, 2009

Over at the terrific Movieweb, they've been talking to director Harold Ramis in advance of the DVD and Blu-ray release of his underwhelming comedy, Year One. And, naturally, they took the opportunity to quiz him about Ghostbusters 3 while they had the man proverbially pinned down. He's not said anything wildly new here, but every little helps...

Ramis reiterates in the interview that Dan Aykroyd has been the driving force behind a third Ghostbusters movie, and that the reaction to the recent videogame did matters no harm either. "I have to remind people that they didn't like Ghostbusters II very much," he noted, "but they still seem to want a third one". For the record, we liked Ghostbusters II - we've even got a love letter to it here.

As for the evolution of the character of Egon, Ramis said that "The thing that I pitched for my character is that he's been living in Geneva, and he works for the Institute of Imaginary Science. The work we are doing doesn't require any conceptual, intellectual, special, or mathematical models for what we are doing. Even we don't know what we are doing. It's that theoretical."

He went on to deny that the film is set to deal with the Mayan calendar, and confirmed that, as of yet, no actor has been approached or signed up to appear in the film (save for the confirmation of the returning names). He ended by saying, "Yeah, we definitely are introducing new Ghostbusters. That much is for sure. And there will be inter-dimensional creatures visiting New York. And we will deal with it. That's all I am allowed to say at this point."

The full interview, where he also discussed the potential remake of Meatballs, can be found here.

The core of Ghostbusters is a Bowery Boys, Abbot and Costello style, classic hollywood horror/comedy. The formula, like the above mentioned comedy teams, works brilliantly with a great cast and writing, but that's the thing...can a new cast achieve the same chemistry as Murray, Aykroyd, and Ramis?

Y does everyone forget about Ernie Hudson? he may have joined the team late but he is an essential part of the team. Also, it was sad to hear Rick Moranis isn't in Ghostbusters 3 because he is a brilliant actor and another great character in series

I dont believe they can match that chemistry with another team. I wish they weren't going for the old "passing the baton" storyline that everyones doing these days. I'd like to see a new Ghostbusters film with the original cast (inc Weaver, Moranis and Potts). I dont want to see a Ghostbusters film with the original cast relegated to supporting roles so that the franchise can be rebooted / reimagined / remade / retconned with bright young things as the leads. It'll be like Extreme Ghostbusters all over again, with Shia LaBeouf, Zac Efron, her from Heroes and a paraplegic... great.

"can a new cast achieve the same chemistry as Murray, Aykroyd, and Ramis?" I don't think they'll be replacing the older cast (not all of them anyway). I imagine the oldies will be taking on a management/ mentor role which could be a good excuse for comedy... I don't know if they'll all be on board though.

I've said it beforeand I'll say it again, I'd rather watch a Ghostbusters 3 with the original cast as pensioners who are still busting than new ghostbusters who are being mentored. If they are going to bring new characters in as the ghostbusters, then do the right thing and get Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughan and Chris Rock. Better screwball, than modern chic.
