Sony presses ahead with Venom movie
Simon Brew
Spider-Man nemesis Venom’s own spin-off movie takes a few steps forward…

The continuing ramifications of Disney's purchase of Marvel are showing little sign of calming, with studios that have access and rights to Marvel characters still looking to quickly press ahead with projects. If they don't, presumably the rights will be back with Disney a whole lot sooner, and you can't see said rights being issued again anytime soon.
The latest example of the Marvel landrush is Sony's decision to push forward with its Spider-Man spin-off movie, Venom. Venom, of course, was one of the villains shoehorned into Spider-Man 3 (and not very convincingly, sadly), and there's been on-off talk of a spin-off for the character for some time. Sony, however, has turned to Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the pair who scripted the incoming Zombieland. Wernick has now confirmed to Sci-Fi Wire that they've penned two drafts for Sony, although he refused to be drawn on any potential link between Venom and the soon-to-start-shooting Spider-Man 4.
When asked, he batted the question pretty much straight back:
"We can't really talk about that, unfortunately. Basically, the studio and Marvel and the Arads are taking our drafts and going beyond and figuring out what's the next step."
It's unlikely there'll be more news on Venom for a while yet, given that Sony's energies are likely to be primarily focused on the new trilogy of Spider-Man movies. But we'll be keeping our ears to the ground...
