Warner Bros confirms Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut release

Simon Brew and Robert Mclaughlin

Ready for nearly four hours of Watchmen – including Tales Of The Black Freighter – all in one go?

Published on Sep 24, 2009

Given the way that the Watchmen movie was funded and thus its distribution carved up, the film was put out by Warner Bros in the US and Paramount in the UK. That, you'd suspect, may well be the reason why we're yet to even see the release of the Director's Cut in the UK on DVD or Blu-ray, and we wonder just how long it's going to take before we see this next release too.

Over in the US, Warner Bros has revealed that it will be releasing Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut on 3rd November, in a five-disc DVD or four-disc Blu-ray set. This is the version of the film that weaves in the deleted and extended scenes that were left out of the theatrical release, and also adds in the animated Tales Of The Black Freighter segments. Tales Of The Black Freighter has already enjoyed a standalone release in the UK, that we reviewed here, but now we get to see just how well it's going to work within the context of the film.

The running time of the Watchmen Ultimate Cut is set to test the power of your backside, though. It now runs to 3 hours and 58 minutes according to The Blu-ray Blog, and we suspect that the pause button will be used once or twice before the end credits roll.

Find The Blu-ray Blog story here. And let's see if we get this limited edition release in the UK at any point. We're not holding our breath, sadly...

SQUEEEEEEEE! Yes I will be pausing it a few times. Yes I will have to get up to make drinks/get snacks/beat children into silence. This is still the DVD highlight of my year! I haven't even checked out any of the other editions cos I heard this was coming and knew it was the one I wanted.

My sentiments exactly! I may actually get a Blu Ray player for this version

This will be the film that convinces me to go Blu Ray, unless some shock LOTR announcement comes first. 4hrs is nothing- I sat through Return of the King man!

This will probably be the version of the film I get. However, I hope there is an option to watch the films and Black Freighter stuff separately too.

This will be a DVD event on a par with The Lord of the Rings deluxe Middle Earth to-the-max edition discs. Excited in the extreme about this eventually coming out.

I'm so glad there are others who feel the same way. There are not many geeks where I am, and I sometimes feel like my enthusiasm is not shared. Thanks Guys! :oD

Not many geeks where you are? Shame! Is there a local Forbidden Planet you can go to? Hang out there and spot some geeks?
