Highlander ‘reimagining’ on the way

Simon Brew

There can be only, er, another one, as Highlander steps into the world of the remake…

Published on Sep 23, 2009

Flushed with the cash that only something like The Twilight Saga can bring, Summit Entertainment is set to deploy some of it on a new version of the film Highlander. It's being described, it seems, as a ‘re-imagination', and Summit has hired the Fast & Furious team of producer Neal H Moritz and director Justin Lin to bring the project to life.

In fact, they're not the only personnel already on board. Original Highlander producer Peter Davis will work on the new version, while Art Marcum and Matt Holloway have been picked to write the script. They're the pair behind the screenplay of Iron Man, which is a promising start.

The plan is for the new film to expand on the mythology of battling immortals that sits at the heart of Highlander, while throwing enough at the screen to kickstart a new franchise for Summit. There's no formal word yet on when things are likely to get moving, but given that there's a director, producers and writers on the payroll already, we'd expect things to get going soon.

So who gets the Lambert role, then? Do you think they've had the Zac Efron/Robert Pattinson conversation yet...?

Why not! The original film is a cult classic, and deserves to be re-imagined for a new generation. The sequels were completely dire and the new producers should take this on board. Only the TV series kept it's roots firmly in the vain of the original film. Ideas? Keep it in the game. Tell the story of this ancient immortal warrior via beautiful flashbacks spanning the centuries. Casting, well maybe Gerard Butler, Dougray Scott, Thomas Jane. And get Muse to do the soundtrack. Winner!

@Omegaspants, I wanna see your version...Muse on the soundtrack would be awesome! Maybe also a cheeky cover of Queen.... HERE WE ARE BORN TO BE KINGS, WE'RE PRINCESS OF THE UNIVERSE!!!! And Thomas Jane in the lead ( well his is the bastard son of Chris Lambert anyways!?! )

Any chance we can have somebody capable of speaking in a believable Scottish accent this time around? Thought not. Hollywood would collapse in on itself if a Scottish actor was hired to play a Scottish character.

more likely this version will feature a 20something hunk, nu mteal soundtrack, and cgi sword fight scenes. no dissapointment. Highlander is a childhood fave of mine.

If they don't cast someone Scottish as Connor McCloud I'll... I'll... well, I'll do what geeks usually do and rant about it online.

Amazing that in the whole article the word 'REBOOT' has been avoided, purposely?! A reimagining, a remake, kickstart a new franchise? It's simply good economics to bet on a reboot of a cash-cow property (5 movies, 2 TV-series, a cartoon version, comics) spanning 2 decades. Thomas Jane is a good idea as the lead. Don't let Nic Cage near it! Ray Winstone could play the teacher-role of Connery. And of course, there is no planet Ziest as in part II...

The first film was a clever and at times exciting piece of hokum, after that it was pants all the way, anyone contemplating watching Highlander 5, would be advised to seek professional help immediately. But Highlander is the franchise that just will not seem to go away, five films, two TV series, a cartoon and it would seem a fan base to rival even "Trek." For myself I hold out little hope of a decent movie but to make it work I'll need a decent Scots in the lead, music by a good band, genre unimportant, but needs to have wide appeal and above all a decent story. The Connor/Kurgen storyline will need a lot more beef for the 21st Century.

recasting the kurgen is about as plausable as recasting Darth Vader....

It's a cracking idea. I fully support the need for a Scottish actor. Gerrard Butler could work, but possibly a bit too beefy for the role. It would take away from the character.

Hell, it can;t get any worse than the one with Mario Van Peebles. I'm still waiting for the region 2 TV series box set though- now that was a good way to carry on the first film's legacy (the whole "I have won the Prize, oh no I haven't" thing aside)

One of the original lead males will be recast as a female, overly attractive, opinionated and annoying. They won't use the freddy mercury music, and it will probably be set in the US...yawn, yawn.
