Weekend US Box Office report: I Can Do Bad All By Myself is another Tyler Perry hit

Nobody cares about what I have to say; Americans love a guy in drag
Tyler Perry tops the box office, leaving Ron weeping into his 9 ticket...

You know what? I'm done, guys. Every time a new ‘Tyler Perry in a fat granny suit' movie comes out, I type up some rant about how I'm so disappointed in people and how there's no accounting for taste or whatever, but I'm done. Nobody cares about what I have to say; Americans love a guy in drag. That's why we've had three Madea movies, two Big Mama's House movies, two Nutty Professors, and a Mrs. Doubtfire. Stuff a guy in a fat suit and people are just going to eat it up with a spoon.
So screw it.
Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself wins the weekend at the box office bringing in $24 million in its first weekend and the incredible visual experience of 9 can only bring in $10.8 million for a weak second place? That's the world we live in. No one ever went broke underestimating the public.
Sorority Row (sixth place, $5.2 million), Whiteout (seventh place, $5.1 million), and 9 together can't even make the box office of Tyler Perry's latest opus. And it didn't even mention star Madea in the title! Yet here it is, crushing everything else that opened against it. Not good competition, I'll admit, but there was a lot of competition and that has to count for something. Sorority Row might actually make less money than the original it was remade from!
Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds broke $100 million this weekend. It's on par to be Tarantino's biggest movie ever (though not after adjusting for inflation), but given how his movies have performed since Pulp Fiction, he's got to be thrilled. The next barrier for the Basterds will be $200 million internationally (it's at $188 million now).
All About Steve (fourth place $5.8 million) leads a pack of clumped-together $5 million pictures. Included in the group is last weekend's top film, The Final Destination (fifth place, $5.5 million). Given how much money the movie has made, I seriously doubt it will be The Final Destination. If we can have six Saws, we can surely have a Fifth Destination movie, right?
District 9 (eighth place, $3.6 million) continues to perform strongly, though Julie & Julia (ninth place, $3.3 million) seems to continue to hold on to its audience the best. Unlike Gamer, audiences seem to keep coming back for more Julia Child. Seems strange, but you can never tell what's going to sell (aside from fat suits).
Coming in last in the top 10 is Gamer. Oh, Gamer. From fourth to tenth is a serious drop, and the movie's weekend gross of $3.1 million only brings it up to $16 million total. I got to see it this weekend (finally) [read the review here] and I have to say it was a disappointment. Apparently I'm not the only one.
There's another big, mixed bag weekend next weekend. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, the latest in a string of animated releases bows opposite from Diablo Cody's horror/comedy, Jennifer's Body. Also out is the odd-looking Matt Damon/Steven Soderbergh team-up The Informant! and the Jennifer Aniston/Aaron Eckhart rom-com Love Happens. Of these, the one I expect to do best will probably be Jennifer's Body, since we're getting closer to Halloween, but you can't count out animation.
