Underworld franchise to be rebooted
The horror action franchise starring Kate Beckinsale is to be given the reboot treatment. Expect a new Underworld movie soon...
Notable for their slow-mo, acrobatic action and Kate Beckinsale as a vampire in black PVC, the Underworld franchise began just over a decade ago. The original Underworld, released in 2003, wasn't a blockbuster in the Marvel sense of the word, but it launched a memorable action heroine and spawned three sequels: Underworld: Evolution (2006), Rise Of The Lycans (2009 - actually a prequel, technically speaking) and Awakening (2012).
To date, the franchise has made a shade over $450m - not a bad sum, given that they didn't cost a huge amount to make in the first place.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is set to be rebooted, with Cory Goodman (who previously wrote the 2011 film Priest, which had a similar action-horror atmosphere) in charge of writing the script. Presumably, the success of great female characters such as Marvel's Black Widow, Katniss Everdeen and, most recently, Scarlett Johansson's Lucy have hastened the decision - and with good reason. With a decent actress and director attached, there's no reason why a new and perfectly decent gothic action film couldn't be made from the Underworld premise.
At the moment, we don't know much else, but we're guessing that Beckinsale and husband Len Wiseman (who directed the first Underworld) won't be involved.
More on this as it comes in.
