Update: David Yates formally announced as director of Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts
Harry Potter stalwart David Yates is back in the saddle for Warner's forthcoming spin-off, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them...
UPDATE: Warner has formally announced that David Yates is indeed the director of the Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. The studio has further revealed that Fantastic Beasts will be "at least a trilogy" according to a report over at Variety. The news comes as part of Warner's plans to reduce costs by $200m annually, while at the same time pressing ahead with its slate of DC comic book movies.
We've known for some time that Warner Bros has been preparing to make a spin-off from the Harry Potter series, with Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them announced almost exactly a year ago.
The pieces seem to be moving into place for the latest fantasy project, with JK Rowling writing the script (based on her 2001 book) and, most recently, the news emerging that David Yates is set to return to the director's chair once again.
Yates is, of course, a stalwart of the Potter-verse, having directed The Order Of The Phoenix, The Half-Blood Prince and the concluding chapters, Deathly Hallows Part One and Part Two.
Although it's still early days for Fantastic Beasts - The Hollywood Reporter says that Yates is "in negotiations" - it seems logical that he'd return to the fold. It's probably reassuring for Warner, too, since his presence can at least ensure a certain continuity of tone even as the franchise heads off into less familiar territory.
More on Fantastic Beasts as it comes in. Until then, there's always our speculative piece on the other Harry Potter spin-offs we'd also like to see.
