Dorian Gray trailer

Is Dorian Gray a paint-by-numbers affair? Or the less censored version the Wilde story deserves? Perhaps clues are in the trailer...

"To reveal art and conceal the artist is art's aim."
~ Oscar Wilde, The Preface, The Picture Of Dorian Gray

Based on Oscar Wilde's 1890-91 gothic horror novel, this incarnation stars Ben Chaplin as Basil Hallward, Colin Firth as Lord Henry Wotton and Ben Barnes (the London-born hot property of The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian) in another eponymous role as Dorian Gray, the very picture of vanity.

The trailer exposes a few fleeting glimpses of that portrait, but it was always a tall order to top the eerie reveal of the 1945 production, shot entirely in black-and-white up until the unveiling of the horrific painting in all its garish full-colour gory glory. Here, some unexpected snatched peeks look like this newest treatment just might be up to the challenge to unnerve and alarm in its own ways.

It's also apparent this version delves and dives more fully into the pleasure-seeking and debauchery where only a toe was dipped in the book and hardly hinted at in the '45 film. (Parts of the original story itself were excised, rewritten and watered down by Wilde and editors due to passages considered controversial in the 19th century.)

You'll find the trailer below (although the background music is a little too foreground for clear dialogue), followed by a second video of Ben Barnes and his thoughts on the part, and the painting, which includes the scene that instigates the whole downward spiral and eventual fate of Dorian Gray...

Dorian Gray is released on 9 September 2009 in the UK.

Read the original story. Very interesting and creepy premise.

Possibly my favourite Wilde novel. Interesting trailer, with a touch of the Sweeny Todd (Burton) roof tops. Suitabley pretty boy actor to hit the younger Twilight groupies. Am sure I will enjoy it, whilst over playing the 1945 version in my head.

Original story is predictably quite elliptical as to what Dorian actually gets up to. The later film versions take a lot from the scandal of Wilde's own life to suggest the depravities.

I think the original story was open to personal interpretation anyway. Which is why it could be used ad abused as a weapon against Wilde. Dorian is a naughty, sexual, fanciable chap, if you dont know whats going on under the ugly horrific surface... as long as this film is along those lines then its same ole same ole init. The flashes to the horrific that were shown in the trailer score points with me. My own interpretations of Dorian are probably more freaky than could be filmed :D

shame it was trashed in todays papers :( the acting being classed as wooden and more like a portrait than an moving cinemagraphic portrayal, though Colin' eye brow was given a worthy mention ... which reminded me of Roger Moore's acting skills.. *sighs*

Has anyone noticed the similarity between the Dorian Gray poster and the one for Perfume? http://www.imdb.com/media/rm58889728/tt0396171

well remembered, viszy, :cD Perfume's was more appropriate, as it's petals coming out of the tear, but it's even at same angle in Dorian. :co
