Wolverine gets his director
John Moore
The Wolverine movie has finished its quest for a director. And the appointment makes Ang Lee on Hulk look positively commercial...
Published on Jul 20, 2007
Variety, and others, are reporting that a guy called Gavin Hood is due to be directing the Wolverine movie - going under the working title Wolverine (another wonderful slice of Hollywood invention).
He better get a move on reading that script though, as it's due to start filming this autumn; as soon as Hugh Jackman finishes on Baz Luhrmann's latest, Australia. Wolverine's due for release next summer, so the rush is certainly on to get underway.
Hood is the South African guy who won the Oscar in 2006 for Best Foreign Language film with Tsotsi; an emotionally charged gang film set in his native country. His selection is certainly a brave choice for a superhero film, with the converted actor only having two full-length movies to his name, and certainly nothing of this type - but it's also an interesting one.
Let's hope the script lives up to the expectation; and that the film doesn't end up being a horrible rush-job.

The original POTC went from an initial meeting to a release in 12 months, so good films can be made under that kind of pressure, but it's pretty unusual...

ahh - Mr John, you beat me to the headline!
The film is scheduled to begin production in November for a 2008 release. Lauren Shuler-Donner, Hugh Jackman (through his Seed Productions) and Jackman’s production partner John Palermo will produce. The film will be written by David (Troy) Benioff and although drafts for the film have leaked out over the past few months ( featuring Sabretooth, Silver Fox and Logans past) there is still no definative script locked.
However workd from film trade press suggest that the film will be based on...
...several resources that include the Marvel Comics lore, along with the more recent Weapon X graphic novels by Frank Miller, "Wolverine" mixes action with an origin story about how Logan emerged from a barbaric experiment as an indestructible mutant with retractable razor-sharp claws.
Hmm it seems that the producers, directors and money men do not really know their mutant lore - as Frank Miller hasnt written Wolverine ( or indeed worked for Marvel for nearly twenty years) and that the recent Weapon X story they mention (which was actually written by Frank Tieri) didnt star Wolveine at all! - My theories for this lapse of knowedge is either 1- they wanted to add Frank Miller in as it seems with 300 and Sin City around the writer/aritst is 'hot' at the moment or 2 - They have been replaced by Skrulls ( see recent Marvel books ) or 3 - They have never picked up a comic in their lives.

Wow, interesting choice. I hope this doesn't suck, because we all remember the disappointment of X3...
Hope the Magneto film gets a good script and director too.

I'd wish they'd use some of the Wolverine far-back-story from the comics, which takes place in the 18th Century, and before he is surgically modified. Even in flashback they could make this deeper than it currently sounds.
