X-Men Origins: Magneto to get moving in 2010?

David Goyer suggests that Magneto's X-Men origin story might actually get moving in the next 12 months...

Given the number of X-Men projects currently bubbling away in development, we were curious to see which was likely to be next in line. Thus far, there's Wolverine 2, Deadpool, an origins movie for Magneto and X-Men: First Class currently in the works, and our suspicion was that it would be Wolverine first, and then everything else could follow. Presumably Marvel would like to get to a point where there's a fresh X-Men movie arriving every year, although given the muted critical response to the downbeat Wolverine, it's no doubt carefully evaluating its options.

The one we thought might get lost was the planned X-Men Origins: Magneto, which has been talked about for the past couple of years with little sign of anything happening. David Goyer has been involved with the project from its early days, though, and according to the latest chat he's had with MTV, he's still keen to get the film moving.

Goyer's schedule has been crammed, which doesn't help, but he's said, "They're still thinking about doing it," declaring "I've been in touch with them. I'm sure that project will move forward in the next year or so."

That's not a hugely promising development, to be fair, as all it seems to confirm is that a Magneto film is still somewhere in development, and hasn't been put into permanent turnaround. But is it just us who can't see Fox and Marvel fast-tracking it ahead of any of the other X-Men projects they've got on the boiler at the moment? The Magneto film was always going to be dependent on the success of the Wolverine movie - which did make a lot of money, to be fair - but that leads us to suspect that bets will be hedged, and that it's a reappearance of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine that'd be next on the cards. Unless they cast Zac Efron in the title role or something, we just couldn't see a Magneto origins story - much as we'd like to see it - doing the same amount of business.

Here's the MTV story.

"a fresh X-Men movie arriving every year..." If that's their masterplan, just go for it! "The Magneto film was always going to be dependent on the success of the Wolverine movie". I hate that dependency! Why bother comparing Wolverine's success to box office predictions of a totally different character? Like comparing an apple to an unborn pear. Do they really think that X-fans would boycot a Magneto movie, just because they might hold a grudge against the Wolverine movie? Oh yes, mister accountant at Fox, you uncovered our conspiracy!

I would much rather go see a Magneto movie than Wolverine 2! Who would think otherwise?! Magneto is one of Marvel's most popular villains and he was a fan favourite from the original trilogy(if we can all forget the third one we'll be better for it). It would be silly to hold off on putting out the Magneto movie any longer.
