The Uwe Boll ready reckoner

Sarah Dobbs

Sarah watches every Uwe Boll film she can get her hands on, so you don't have to. Or at least so you'll know which one to start with...

Published on Apr 18, 2008

A lot of people say Uwe Boll is the worst director of all time. But, for the most part, they haven't seen more than one or two of his movies - if they've actually bothered to watch any at all! I, on the other hand, have watched pretty much all of the films that are available in the UK - plus some that aren't, and some that have only done festival rounds. Because I'm just that dedicated.

Here's the rundown:

Barschel - Mord in Genf? (1993) 1 out of 5
Not a particularly strong start, this short film is about a director who wants to make a film about the alleged murder of German politician Uwe Barschel. It might have been better to actually make a movie about Uwe Barshel, to show rather than tell some of the conspiracy theories surrounding his death. This movie is mostly just people sitting in rooms spouting exposition. Disappointing.

Das Erste Semester (1997) 2 out of 5
The First Semester is a typical university comedy - a young man makes a deal with his rich grandfather that he'll pass two courses and get a steady girlfriend by the end of his first semester, and in return he'll inherit tons of money. Stupidity and scatological humour ensue; the first half is surprisingly diverting, but it's a little too clichéd to be worthwhile.

Blackwoods (2002) 2 out of 5
A pretty run-of-the-mill slasher in the woods story. Um. Yeah, that's pretty much all there is to say about this one. You'll find it in a bargain bin at your nearest service station. Unremarkable in the extreme, though not actually offensive.

House of the Dead (2003) 4 out of 5
The movie that kicked off the anti-Boll crusade, House of the Dead is actually one of my favourite films. It's full of daft zombies and bullet-time kung-fu and stupid teenagers and Star Trek in-jokes and I just... love it.

Alone in the Dark (2005) 1 out of 5
Unredeemably bad. Alone in the Dark is overly convoluted nonsense with nothing to distract you from the awfulness of the script. And the acting. And, oh, the acting. The acting is ... well, the adjective that describes how terrible the acting in this is hasn't been invented yet, but it's bad. Pass.

BloodRayne (2005) 3 out of 5
BloodRayne is infinitely more interesting, with lots of gore and a vampire Meatloaf surrounded by vampire prostitutes. Played by real prostitutes. Shot on location in Romania, BloodRayne throws out the plot of the videogame and invents an entirely new background for the half-human half-vampire of the title. Campy, but fun.

Seed (2007) 3 out of 5
When a serial killer survives two attempts to execute him in an electric chair, the authorities daftly decide to bury him alive again. Sounds silly, but there's some really and truly horrific gore and nastiness in this movie. It's hard to watch, but intentionally so. The PETA footage is pushing it, mind you.

Postal (2007) 4 out of 5
Genuinely hilarious, Postal sends up everyone and everything imaginable - and manages to make a couple of political points along the way, too. It's Boll's masterpiece, his best film to date.

BloodRayne II: Deliverance (2007) 1 out of 5
A phoned-in sequel produced solely for the money, there are nevertheless a couple of hilarious moments in this, but it's not worth the pain of getting to them. Everyone in this movie looks like they're suffering, which, filming in the middle of a Vancouver winter, they probably were.

Not seen: German Fried Movie, Sanctimony, Heart of America, In The Name of The King

I like how, despite all your fervent Uwe fangirlism, his "masterpiece" is a 4-star film amongst a collection of 1-3 stars. You are definitely mental for giving House of the Dead 4 stars! Postal does look okay, in a "live action South Park" kind of way.

I can think of directors who've never made anything above a 1-star movie...

Well, that may be the case - but I'm guessing these directors do not promote themselves quite in the way our Mr. Boll does (aside from Eli Roth, maybe - who I consider a 1-star director but a 4-star showman). You always ask why he gets all the hate but other directors make films you deem as just as bad, or worse, and yet do not attract the same kind of ire - short answer is that he relishes it, and even propagates it, as you hint at in your other article. My point is that just because other directors are bad does not validate Uwe's films as anything more - the "myth" of Uwe Boll is of more interest to seemingly everyone (including you, if I'm being a little presumptious) than the actual quality of his films, for better or worse. I've even bought into this in the past and I am doing everything in my power to stop, haha. Hope I haven't offended! Just observations.

Like with Eli Roth, though, I'd counter that I didn't become interested in the man behind the hype until after I saw the movie. I saw House of the Dead twice in cinemas, for example, long before I knew anything about Uwe Boll (well, duh, 'cause the backlash didn't happen till after that movie came out...). It pisses me off that it's come to the point where 200,000 people are willing to sign a petition saying he should be stopped from making movies when there are directors out there making blatantly offensive films (not just bad, either!) and no-one's petitioning them. At the end of the day, I genuinely like House of the Dead and Postal, and thought Seed was well-made (if difficult to "like", exactly). The rest of Boll's output isn't as good (so far!) but it's ridiculous that he gets so much stick (being called the worst director in the world, mostly) when it's so unjustified. I'll also grant you that he's one hell of a self-publicist. But so what? Tons of movies come out that have been hyped to the skies that actually totally suck; that's how the movie business works. On the Eli Roth note: I still think that Cabin Fever was good, and Hostel was fantastic. Hostel Part II is utter, utter dross, and I think he believes his own hype now and is really not a very nice or even interesting person any more, but that doesn't mean I don't still think he made two good films.

I'm suddenly very amused after reading all the Boll articles that he didn't do justice to the gripping and profound narrative of the House of the Dead video game. Hahaha! Just don't get me started on P.W.S.A again...

Totally - I don't hold his powers of self-publicity against him in the slightest. He's a savvy businessman without a doubt - he has to be, else he would never get another film made. Worst director in the world? Impossible. His films get worldwide releases (mostly). Worst films ever made? Hell no, I've seen Blood Gnome. I've seen One Missed Call U.S. But the films of his I have seen are bad. Really bad. And no amount of self-aggrandising / general public negativity changes that.
