Spring Breakers 2, Maniac Cop remake revealed
Production company Wild Bunch has announced plans for Spring Breakers 2 and a Maniac Cop remake.
Of the companies announcing their slates ahead of the Cannes Film Festival, Wild Bunch is the first to announce something of a surprise. For it's announced a rather unexpected sequel: Spring Breakers: The Second Coming.
Harmony Korine, who wrote and directed the first movie, won't be back for the second. Instead, Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting) will write the script and Jonas Ackerlund will direct. Ackerlund is most famed for his music video work including, er, The Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up, but has directed features such as Spun, Small Apartments and the rather good Horsemen.
The film will see the bikini-clad criminals going up against a bunch of extreme militant Christians who attempt to convert them. It certainly sounds interesting.
Wild Bunch's Vincent Maraval revealed that "it's not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original". At this point there's no mention as to whether James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson or Rachel Korine will reprise their roles, but we'd imagine they won't be back.
Wild Bunch is also working on a remake of Maniac Cop. Nicolas Winding Refn is producing that, although won't direct. William Lustig, who helmed the original, is co-producer. Ed Brubaker (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) has penned the screenplay. No director has yet been announced.
